a good IBM 120GXP review PLEASE...

Without Storagereview, it will be harder to choose a HD. I read one review of the 120GXP somewhere. It had like 48 MB/sec STR which is pretty nice.
 
Thanks. That helps a little but I still want a more descriptive and in-depth review. O well, I guess I'll just have to wait.
 
One more thing. I bought this drive from newegg and it is one fast motha. Take note of something said in the review about the platters in the drive being glass. The older GXP drives had aluminum (sp?) platters. When the platters become heated from spinning crazy fast they stretch and the data sectors are suddenly not where the read heads expect them to be. The read head tries to right its self and keep going to where the data used to be at the same time which causes the "click of death". Other drives do not suffer from this fate because the manufactures cannot pack the platters so tightly and there is more room for wear. Using the glass platters the 120gxp will not suffer the same fate as the previous versions did. Glass is HIGHLY heat resistant and I believe that scsi drives have been using glass for some time due to the speed at which the platters are spun. According to the review the new 120gxp drives are the overall fastest ide drives out there. As for the squeeking noise and the high operating temp.. Niether have been an issue for me. The temp feels the same as my WD 20gig and there is not a squeeking noise, that is audible any ways. 🙂

Well, you could always check the forums over at Storagereview.
SInce Eugene has decided they will still try to keep the site going. Trying to get financial support for that
will take time away from doing some reviews (no 120GXP yet), but the forums there are alive and
well and full of people trying to help out. They could probably give a lot of valuable feedback about
the 120GXP themselves.

 
I am not trusting those IBM 120 gxp series HDs when there is a faster IDE HD out there than any IBM 120 gxp series HD. Which is the WD1200JB with 8 mb of cache. Plus it runs only at 22C in use and its 3 platters but guess what Dum IBM 120 gxp series 80 gig HD runs at 48C in use and it only has 2 platters.
Those IBM 120 gxp series need some serious cooling and i do not even know if that will help.
 
imtim83, where so those temp numbers come from? 22C sounds awful cool for any HD. That is basically room temp. How is that possible? Most any case temp is well above that. Also 48C? Where does that come from?

Then scroll down to the bottom intill you see Temperature in bold big letters. Then read that and it says the IBM 120 gxp series 80 gig HD with 2 platters or dual platters runs at 48C.

And how do i know the WD1200JB with 8 mb of cache runs at 22C hmmm. Lets see i know exactly how i know that too. Well wait i made a mistake on the WD1200JB with it running at 22C. It runs at 17.1 C. But that is not bad because thats even cooler ! 🙂

Interesting numbers. I still am missing something here (maybe I'm thick). I'm a US Fahrenheit kind of guy. 17.1C = 62.8 F. Cooler than the average 70 F room temp. What was the ambient temp during testing? The 120GXP was not tested in that same SR article. You can't compare one article/testbed to another.
 
Here is another Xbit review. The WD isn't in there, but they have 4 other recent drives which all run 40 - 41C. Assuming the testing conditions were exactly the same for the 120GXP (a big assumtion), the IBM runs 7- 8 C warmer than most. SR was talking "NET" temps. I think they may be measuring net temp above ambient, not actual temp.

What I find odd is that 48C = 118.4F is obviously a little on the hot side for a HDD. As oldfart pointed out, the Xbit review of the D740X & other comparative HDD's had them all running around 40~41C. An ~8C rise for the 120GXP isn't anything to be concerned about when you have a nice 80MM fan blowing over your drives already. Those Antec SX1030 cases offer a nice cooling solution.
 
John, I'd like to see what your 120GXP runs at. Speedfan can read HD temps. Could you run IOmeter or something to heat it up for a few hrs and tell us what the temps are?
 
Be warned though! The IBM 120GXP has a monthly power on recommended usage of 333 hours, that means only 11 hours a day. I've never seen this before, but it was brought to my attention by the storagereview.com site. Personally I would hesitate to buy ANY drive with such a strange spec.
