Got 2 computers connected to a d-link router. I cant get file/printer sharing to work.
I have run the home/ small office network setup wizard many times.
iTunes has song-sharing and when I conencted an iBook G4 to the router wirelessly, all I had to do was type in
\\192.168.0.105\username
to access it...

I checked the internal IP of the other computer and it was 192.168.0.101.
Typing in
\\192.168.0.101\username with or without the username doesnt work.
The computer's name is
PINTO.

\\PINTO doesnt work either.

I cant even get it to access the same network as my computer. I think thats the first step towards getting simple file-sharing and printer sharing enabled...

1: Make sure all computers have the same workgroup
2: Make sure all computers have different names
3: Right-click on something like My Documents and select Sharing.
4: Follow the Wizard to setup basic sharing. Do this on all computers.
5: Go to Printers and Faxes and right-click the printer you wish to share and select Sharing.
6: Follow the wizard, and that is all there is to it.

Both computers are on MSHOME
One is FERRARRI
Other is PINTO

I have printers set to share
When I "View workgroup computers", its only me or the iBook if I have it connected.
On my other computer, If I select "view workgroup computers" or do anything related to it, I get an error "Mshome isnt accessible. You have no permission r the network doesnt exist."
blah blah.
what do I do?

On my router settings, it registers both desktops, my windows laptop, and the iBook...
the IP addresses, everything is on the router settings. But I cant connect.
I think it may be the firewall.
Lemme check.
iTunes is on the exception list for the firewall, so iTunes song sharing works. Maybe something like that?
What ports do I open? What do I do to selectively get the firewall to enable file and printer sharing?

my desktop is Windows XP MCE 05
other desktop is XP Home
other laptop is XP Home
My friend's OS was OSX Tiger.

Driver support for Vista sucks right now. Especially for my gfx card. Not gonna switch for a while.

OK, I can see why you are having such a problem.

Windows XP Media doesn't like to play nice with XP Home.

Where is this shared printer attached?

Which computer is giving what response?

From each station, ping each other station by name, then by IP address. What are the results?

The normal-laser printer is onto the MCE computer.
The high-res EPSON Stylus 2200 and the EPSON Perfection 4870 Scanner is connected to the XP Home desktop.
The MCE doesnt register any of the Home computers but does recognize OSX.
the HOME computers gives an errpr when connecting to the MCE computer, but untested on OSX since my friend isnt at my house right now.

I tried going to start...run and typing
\\192.168.0.101 which is the internal IP of the HOME computer.
No results.
\\192.168.0.105 is the internal IP of the MCE computer and when trying to connect to the MCE computer, the computer momentarily freezes.

pinging HOME from MCE gives a timed out error.
BUT
pinging MCE from the HOME computer gives me a ping rate of <1 ms.

Turn off Modem
Turn off Router
Turn off all three systems.

By off, I mean completely shutdown plus unplugged.

Plug in and Turn on Modem and wait for it to have stable lights.
Plug in and Turn on modem and wait for it to have stable lights.
Plug in and Turn on XPH desktop and see if you can go to your router (usually 192.168.1.1 - your router manual should tell you this)

Depending on what brand router you have, you will need a password (which may be blank, as in the case of Linksys) and a password (admin on a Linksys). Hereagain, your router manual should tell you what this is.

Once that is successful, plug in and turn on the XPH laptop and repeat previous step.
Once that is successful, plug in and turn on the XP media system and repeat steps above to talk to the router.

When that is complete, then you are fairly sure you have a physical connection from all of the comptuters to the router and you are then ready to revisit stacks and settings and such as that on the three systems.

If any of the systems will not complete this step, go into the network properties and uninstall the network card . . . then go into the Device Manager and uninstall the network card . . . then reboot the computer. This will force a reinstall of the required protocols and their stacks etc., which may be the root of your problem.

Be aware of the fact that you may or may not ever get XP Media to play nice with
XP Home

Going home for the night . . . will check your progress in the morning.

Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings,http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html

As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is allowed to be shared.

The instructions state

* copy nbf.sys into the %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ directory
* copy netnbf.inf into the %SYSTEMROOT%\INF\ directory

I did the first one, but there is no C://Windows/INF directory...
my friend's and my other computer doesnt have it either.
Should I make one?

edit: I manually got to the folder, but now I cant find the "install" button to install the protocol...

Woo!
It registers as a workgroup computer.
But I dont have permission to access the files... wtf?

My MCE computer can access the Home computer's files, but the Home computer doesnt have "permission"...
WTF??
