A good DVD player?

I'm finally looking to jump on the DVD bandwagon this holiday season (my old VCR just bit it), and I'm looking for some suggestions on what's a good rig for hopefully less than $300. I was looking over at cNet.com, and found them praising the Samsung DVD-N2000, but other reviews around the web have basically said the opposite. Does anyone have a suggestion for a player, or even just a site with good reviews? I've never really gone looking for home theatre components on the web before, and I'm having a hard time getting consistency from anywhere.

Thanks in advance,

Jon

Toshiba SD-1600. Despite what people here say, and the manual for that matter, it DOES play CDRs and DVDRs, as every user review will confirm. (I have indeed tried a DVDR, since I have access to a DVD production suite and a DVD burner/spindle of DVDRs.) I'll hook you up with some user reviews in a sec. BTW, it's about $200.00 in brick & mortar stores, and probably much cheaper online. An AMAZING player.

I just (tonight) bought a 5-disc carousel DVD player (Pioneer DVC503)...retails at $399, I got it for $180 at 800.com. If you do a quick search for "DVD" you'll find several threads about it. I personally started one in OT and it got moved to GH, so check there if you want to read it. (The 1-disc version of that Pioneer I bought can be had for $150 at 800.com. Retail: $299)

You may want to check out the Panasonic DVDRV30, which I just bought Friday night and should receive next week. With coupons, rebates, MSN Passport 20% off, and current promotions at www.800.com, you can have the player for $97 shipped (it retails for $250). Check out Audio Review for plenty of reviews (www.eopinions.com is ok, too -- I write reviews there, but there are some really garbage ones since people slap up a review in the hopes of hits to earn money).

The Panasonic has about 40 reviews at Audio Review and nearly all are favorable. I was attracted to it since people say the picture and sound quality is excellent, and the price was VERY right. Also, there was no consistent mention of skipping problems or disk recognition problems, both of which dinged the Toshiba players for me (as stated at Audio Review).

Check out the Hot Deals forums for more information on the 800.com deal.
