A good cheap track car?

So I kinda want a car specifically for track and autoX use. I was thinking something RWD and in the sub ~5k range for the car itself (and then a couple thousand on mods)

Current ideas
'71 2.0L porsche 914
'95 e36 M3 (though these are like 10-12k but the stock suspension and brakes are just SOOOO very nice)

anyone else have any other ideas?

Mazda Miata is a good choice, but better woud be a Silvia, aka Nissan 240sx. The 180sx and 200sx would also be viable options

miata
MR2
Mini? (new one...maybe second hand they arent too expensive?...very good cars to chuck round, despite being FF)
Nissan 240sx (silvia?)
Mazda MX-6
lotus elise?
caterham super 7 (you can build one your self!...buy the kit and a donor car and get making)
Porsche 944 turbo

go with the 1.8, 1994-1997

Yes... all the right reasons, but are these going for under $5K these days? If so I might just have to buy (another) one. Would be the 5th Miata I've owned!

S13 Nissan 200SX. RWD, lightweight, 2L Turbo powerplant has plenty of potential. Jap drifters and street racers love it.

thank you for playing GT3 and or 4

the lotus elise is like 40+ grand
the caterham when you build it is still very expensive as well

the 944 would be nice if i could get a european version since it weights less than the american (which is like 2800 lbs)

oh ya about the miatas i know they do really good at autox...but how do they do at road courses?

oh and the 240 doesn't seem to be that spectacular for power to weight off the bat....i know there are lots of parts out there for them but
160 hp and ~2,800 lbs is not spectacular

the miata 128hp and ~2,300lbs sounds a bit better

Another vote for the S13 240SX.

Get the coupe for better chasis rigidity, huge aftermarket, and lots of 300ZX TT parts will bolt on.

how are the stock suspension and breaks on the 944?
and are there easy ways to remove weight?

RX7, Miata, 240-300, 2002. Atlanta Region used to have ITT - Improved Touring Truck.

Edit - Some regions allow Legends cars too.

Edit edit - What about F500?
