a friend of mine is offering me his old HP 9510 for like 90 bucks used. but its just a 12x8x32 and for some ungodly reason its retailing at 200 bucks on pricewatch (must be a newer model or something). but what justification is there to pay 90-100 bucks on a 12x8x32 deal while i can get a lite-on 24x10x40 for $71??

i havent seen any anandtech articles on the subject, but ill look a lil more. any way, im more interested in your input. just cuz burners and disks are kind of a more organic/versatile (for lack of a better word) subject. what success do you have with your burners and what kind are they?

thnx

I have had success with all my burners except a Panasonic (Matshita) CW-7586 - that drive was not good.

I have a Ricoh MP7120A drive in my PC at home and yes, I adore it.. it is the best CD-RW I have used thus far...

I have an LG 8160 at work and it's a very very good burner for the money, too.. it's a 16X though, my Ricoh is a 12.

I have seen the LiteOn for as low as 13x CAD dollars and I'd either buy that, or the LG, personally.
I have also seen some good deals on a 20X Ricoh, but I don't know anything about the drive.

I am a Ricoh and LG fan for burners after owning these 2.

I've had no problem with either my TDK 8/4/XX - I think 24 or my TDK 12/10/XX - 32, I think. The only reason that I went with them, however, is because theye were cheap, locally, when I bought them. I would not hesitate to buy a lite on drive for my next CDRW - I have heard many good things about them around here. Besides, HP seems to like to overcharge for mediocre products

Edit: The only coaseters that I have burned on either burner were a result of a 686b bug (or maybe it was motherboard specific, I am not sure anymore). This is maybe 5 out of hundreds, and that was on the 8x, the 12 hasn't failed me yet .

That's because they are (at least used to be) manufactured by Sony. = overpriced

LITE ON! LITE ON! LITE ON! (uh huh, settle down, beavis...)

Don't pay more when you don't have to, unless youre being a really good friend to a guy who needs the dough.

i got to reading some cd-rw reviews and the liteon 24x10x40 looks friggin sweet, feature packed, and only around 80-90 bucks. however, there is an alternative. the yamaha crw3200 is just as awesome, feature packed, etc. but the yamaha has something they call audio master quality. basically it burns the pits longer in the cd-r resulting in (some say) much higher quality sound. but you can only but like 67 minutes on an 80 minute cd with this enabled. the yamaha (not considering dependability) looks just as good as the liteon (feature-wise) plus it has the master quality burning and its price tag is TWICE that of the liteon, around 160.

tough choice, but i really would like to have the audio master quality option when i want it...

edit: has anyone tried this new yamaha burner? im sure its a good one, but id like to see what ppl think. especially about the master quality thing

thnx

I have the following CDRW drives and none gave me any problems.
HP7200 - external parallel port. Recently opened the casing and remove the IDE and installed it on my old comp as an internal IDE. 2X burn is beginning to be a pain. But at that time it was the fastest available. Need it for a special software (Video Pack 4.0), can't get drive updates from CeQuadrat (Roxio) at the moment.

HP8100 - 4X internal, after serving me very well I sold it to a friend. (4X is beginning to be a pain)

Yamaha 2100E - sweet 16x drive, however i needed to burn 99 min VCD, this drive will go ~90 min tops, so it has to go. Sold it to a friend.

LG-GCE8160B - my current baby, able to burn ~102 min VCD (I have not really tested how far it can go, but it depends on the media as well), burn proof at 16X - sweeeet

Sony CRX700E (laptop- thinkpad T21) 8X, good to have around when I am burning lots of CD's.

These drives have been very stable and good. You need a good CD mastering program. My favorite, NERO is very stable. I had problems with EZCD, tried most versions 3.0, 4.02 and Platinum 5, never liked it.

If you are in the maket, assess what you need it for to get a better match. From what I do with it and bang for the buck, my best purchase by far is the LG-GCE8106B.

Get the LiteOn 24x I paid $85.00 for it at a Computer Show and it is the best burner I have had including the two HP's
Get this drive and you wont be sorry. It is compatible with CloneCd as well

Agreed, IMO, both HP and Sony like to overprice their average products, however the new HP burners are using Sanyo hardware.
