Sorry for the double-post. I didn't even see this category the first time :)

Okay, so I am looking to get a laptop, somewhere under $800. I am not going to use it for much, I am just going to load linux on it so my gf can do web, mail, etc on it and I can do java and work on my site. Anyways, I want to buy online, because I'd pay an extra $200 at staple or bestbuy, etc., but, I can't screw around with it, of course.

I was looking at an ibm thinkpad (P3 @ 900mhz, 128ram, 20g hdd) on tigerdirect (only $500). I was also looking at an Averatec 3150H (1600+ xp-m, 256ddr, 20g, cdrw). Anyone have any experience with either? problems? Last laptop I had, an old ctx 133mhz, the lcd snapped off the base when I opened it one day, pos. Any other decent deals or good laptops anyone know of? I just need a sturdy laptop that will get the job done.

Oh yeah, it's gotta be able to run linux, screw windows.

Do what my Linux using friends do, work backwards. Find out what specific hardware is fully supported by Linux, then find a notebook that uses that hardware. Power management will be the biggest snag.
