A Gift Horse

An interesting update.

A few days ago I was here asking for rescue because I thought my system had picked up a destroying virus, --because The computer was suddenly inop and claiming to have no operating system. As I explained to all - the problem was my having left a flash drive plugged in to USB and my system tried to boot from the flash drive that had no operating system loaded to it. I have since corrected that by disabling boot from USB in the bios. But as I discovered today - the flash drive did have something else it uploaded to my system----A TROJAN!!!!

My weekly deep scan by Trend Micro Security Suite last night let me know this morning that it found a trojan on the system and would I like to have it done away with - of course I did.

I have no idea how long that trojan has lain dormant on that flash drive waiting for a boot attempt to install itself. The flash drive has an interesting history. My son-in-law gave it to me as a stocking stuffer XMAS 2007. He was a tech manager in production for Discovery Channel in Silver Spring, MD. One of his employees gave it to him at some time in the past and the employee had been given it as a promo gift by the company - Autodesk. My son-in law had never used it and since it was laying around at his house office he gave it to me as a stocking stuffer since it is family tradition to give folks stuff you might have gotten the XMAS before or whatever.

When I got it it had a couple of Autodesk commercials on it and some music the original guy had downloaded. I deleted that stuff and stuck the flashdrive in the corner of my desk where it lay for over a year until my wife had her computer meltdown the first time that started this whole boondoggle ending in replacing her hard drive. I downloaded drivers from Linksys for her wireless USB adapter - and then because of the WEP changes needed to reconfigure the adapter on the Church computer- you know the rest of the story.

Just goes to show you you do have to sometime look a gift horse in the mouth.:gift:

Never use a second hand flash drive. It's bad juju.
EDIT: And if you find a black sandisk flashdrive with an Exclamation point label on it, definitely don't plug that one into a windows machine...
