A gift for you

I work with this guy. His bro/sis inlaws are retired from Microsoft with tons of money. For Christmas they paid off everyones houses for them and gave them the titles for a gift. This guys wife went and bought a new truck for $17k. Her sis sent her a check for $10k and the guy I work with a check for $7k. This guy I work with is just bitchen and complaining! "I can take care of myself", "I dont need there help." He makes all of $10 an hour in the warehouse, he is in his early 50's. I told him "Just say thanks". Am I wrong here? I mean, these people say "we can give you $10k per year, its a tax thing." "We know you can support yourself, we just wanted to do this for you." I dont see anything wrong with this, or am I crazy?

There's nothing wrong with what the bro/sister-in-law did, but it's a pride thing for the guy you work with. It's humbling to have someone else pay off your debt, whatever the reason.

I'd have a hard time with it too - I could use someone to pay off my debt and hand me a little extra, but it would be very painful for me to accept anyway. It's all about pride.
