huh. looks pretty good. its a shame Dwarf Fortress hasnt made ANY headway in moving to 3D or at the very least 2D sprites. Dwarf Fortress is fantastic, but it needs an overhaul.

Agreed hell even mouse support would be great for Dwarf Fortress. If anyone picks this up please post your thoughts.

www.rockpapershotgun.com has a review, pretty meh from the sound of it. I'll pass. Or, isn't dungeon keeper on Gog now? I kinda want to play that again now..

Yeah, sketchy review. I almost get the feeling that he doesn't like this type of game though. Well, there are plenty of people who would like another dungeon keeper, then when something similar comes along it gets shamed for being like dungeon keeper. :\

That said, it looks more like Dwarf Fortress to me... but lacking in areas. For instance, in DF you need to go to the above ground and chop wood if you wanted wood, if you needed to trade you had to wait for the traders to arrive, you need a safe place to trade where invaders weren't going to run them off, and if you wanted you could kill them yourself and take their stuff.(better be ready for a huge invasion afterwards though) It seems like trading in this game is just an instant process in which you don't have control over. Just click and you have.

Your dwarves in DF also wanted their own individual rooms, some dwarves needed offices, some needed specific furniture such as chests, weapon storage, desks... all this stuff also required resources such as paper to write on, writing tools...., which you had to discover and craft yourself.
DF also had a hospital room which required specifically trained dwarves, materials for casts, thread for surgery, water from a well to clean wounds..

That's another thing, I don't see water in this game. You don't have to engineer aqueducs with pumps, levers and floodgates, you don't run the risk of flooding your entire fortress. That was an extremely fun challenge. You also needed to irrigate your farmland with this water.

It looks like a step in the right direction but is lacking all the complexities of DF. Perhaps this will be a game of endless updates? Or maybe it's finished and nothing more will become of it? I would like to know.

I'll probably give it a shot tonight after work just to see.

EDIT: With everything said, I think I just want an updated DF with a proper GUI and controls. There is just so much complexity in DF that I'm not seeing in this game. To go down the list and name them all would be like writing a dictionary here. Too bad for DF though, I haven't played it in so long that I don't want to spend a month watching videos to learn how to play it again.

The graphics have a childish look to them.

Yeah, the graphics are not what I would call serious and/or gritty. I think that was intentional though. Saves on developement money I'm sure. A game like this would be all about the game play I'm thinking. Its kinda cutesy but major fun from what reviews I been watching on youtube. Its not a high budget game to be sure by the looks of it. Something for the young kids as well as adults.

Allow me to quote some of the players: “Played non stop since I got home from college, Can’t wait to play more tomorrow! Amazing game, thanks for making it!”, ”Just wanted to tell the devs how much I appreciate the amount of love they’ve put into this jewel of a game.” or the more modest “Thank you for a great game.” .

Well, I can say that I've had a good deal of fun with this game but it's waning quickly; mostly because of a lack of complexity but also in part by the lack of options for the custom game mode.

To put is short, I want Dwarf Fortress. Dwarf fortress is perfect, with the biggest mindnumbing flaw ever to exist in a game; the interface.

With that said, here are my suggestions:

  1. Be Dwarf Fortress

For real... :

One thing that would probably keep me playing is some sort of 'abyss' mode.. where there are no 'event areas' anywhere near the top layers so that I can build until the cows come home. But then make the more valuable(and possibly optional) resources down deep... deep where only the baddies are at.

Another thing is the battle mechanics are strange... if you tunnel into an area with creatures a little too high level for your warriors then it's pretty much game over. There is no tactical way to overcome this. I cannot build a bridge that can be raised then release a floodgate like in dwarf fortress. I can only respawn dwarfs as fast as I can and send lvl 1 warriors at the level 30 troll I just disturbed as it slowly destroys everything I have. There is no way of knowing what level creatures are in the event rooms... so what do I do then? I stay away from them until all my warriors are max level.. then I go through the event rooms one by one and mindlessly watch enemies get destroyed which is just a grind that isn't even fun.

This game needs a new mechanic that makes fight a little more interesting. I cannot build walled-in rooms that I can fill with archers(like in Dwarf Fortress) that can shoot through windows in the walls that keep my dwarves safe. I can't flood enemies out their lairs, water doesn't exist, crafting of tools and weapons doesn't exist, needing managers for different dwarf classes that need offices that need special equipment to work don't exist.

Instead of going on and on about everything detail that is in Dwarf Fortress that isn't here I'll stop now.

Oh, and I made an account on the Game of Dwarves forum but it wont let me post for 5 days after an account is created. :colbert:
