A game is not recognizing my hardware acceleration. . . . HELP!!!!

I'm trying to play my old favorite game Homeworld: Cataclysm.

I have an AIW Radeon (DDR) AGP. I have the newest drivers from ATI and DX8.1 installed. The ATI drivers supposedly include OpenGL and D3D. Homeworld Cataclysm supports both OpenGL and D3D, but it claims the only mode available to me would be Software rendering.

What gives?? What do I need to do to it to make the hardware acceleration work? My crappy 600MHz processor may be able to handle the rendering, but the full T&L hardware rendered mode is SOOOO much nicer looking. 🙂

Thanks,
Eric

Well, I could be totally wrong, but...

Some games will only allow you to change the accelerator settings from the main menu, in other words, before you start an actual game session. The in-game video menu usually only allows you to change settings like gamma correction and object detail etc. I hope I do not come across as thinking you are stupid, but sometimes the solution is so obvious it is easy to miss. I had this happen to me with X-Wing Alliance. I went straight into a game after installation, then noticed that my vidcard was not recognised and the game was running with software acceleration, and the accelerator options were grayed out. I exited and restarted the game several times, but it did not help. Then somehow I accidentally brought up the video settings between two missions, and I realised what a fool I was. 🙂

I haven't started a game yet.

I just installed it and went straight into the video settings and saw nothing but "software" as an option. 🙂
