Cnet's full article

"Both Apple and Microsoft have been dialing up the rhetoric. In an interview this week with BusinessWeek magazine, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates rejected the notion promoted by Apple CEO Steve Jobs that portable video isn't important.

"Ask kids in the back of a car on a two-hour trip, 'Hey, would you like to have your videos there?' My kids would," Gates said. "I guess Steve's kids just listen to Bach and Mozart. But mine, they want to watch 'Finding Nemo.' I don't know who made that, but it's really a neat movie."

Portable as in car based, yes. But we already have DVD systems in cars.
Portable as in walkman, no. Noone is going to walk and watch a movie at the same time, unless they want to get hit by a car.

I know quite a few people who dump dixv movies onto PPC's and watch them while sitting on a bus or train to and from work. Plus in a airport or on a plane would nice as well.

Obviously you are crossing the threshold between several different niches - portable DVD players, laptops, ect, but there's certainly a market for it, albeit pretty small in comparison to portable MP3 players.

Pff skrew that. Imagine working out at the gym and having all the episodes of your favorite tv shows in the palm of your hand. Sounds pretty fvcken good to me.

Also, it would be VERY cool if ABC, NBC, CBS, FX, ect could set up a deal where you could pay to download the previous nights episode of your favorite show to these devices. I know I would find it nice to be able to download a couple weeks worth of various shows that I missed and catch up when I spend 8 hours a week traveling on a plane.

Microsoft's lab in Beijing actually is working heavily with video at the moment, though mostly video compression for handheld devices.

Bill's comment is classic.

As nice as a portable video player seems to be, I don't think the market is ready to adopt yet.
