Starbucks Stories

77.http://www.starbucksunion.org/...utes/main1532246.shtml
Employment Law:
It is concerning how we can't tell any more what will be racist and what won't.

Social Networks/Recruiting:
More proof that if it says it enough times on the internet it must be true.

Ideas in an Economic Downturn:
These employment ideas are simple, some are simply to lie and some are simply to deceive; When unethical conduct is what is rewarded in corporate America it is no wonder we why we get the problems that we do.

Selection
Using interesting questions and interview techniques is an interesting concept, but it is important that they be for a good reason, not just some jerk HR guys sadistic pleasure.

Training
This is the best thing in the whole set, listening to the top people in the industry talk about how to train workers. Finding out if what you are training is actual achieving a business end is essential.

HR issues
Microsoft is an interesting place to work, the concept of a 'job brand' separate from a 'product brand' is an amazingly good one.

Benifits
There is a schism between those that see that benefits can add more than they cost and those that want to cut every cost possible. The accountants don't know about people, only dollars and so they destroy companies whenever they are put in charge.

compensation
The fair labor standards act is a good thing to know but the Steve Kerr work "On the folly of Rewarding A while Hoping for B" is very enlightening and anyone even tangentially related to hiring systems should eat that like Montag before a book was burnt.

Citigroup Plans to Rais Salaries by as Much as 50%
Smartest move anyone could make in this economic down turn, buy the good guys and get what you can out of them.

performance Appraisal
To sum this one up: do appraisals so you can help your employees as people, do NOT fill out some 10page questionnaire with no relevant outcome; work with the individual.

labor/wal-mart
I doubt that wla-mart will ever have a union to deal with, it is very easy to find people to do the simplistic low-impact jobs done in wally-world. I just wish there was a credible threat of unions so they would behave better towards their workers.
