They got the base model because it was in their price range (fair enough), and didn't get the turbo because it didn't have AWD. Ah, wait a minute! Yes, that's right. Either the dealer lied to them or they didn't look into the fact that you can't buy a forester without AWD.

I feel like buying the turbo just to show them (but I won't ;)).

Why would the dealer not want them to buy the more expensive model? Maybe he needed to clear some of the base model from his lot.

I like the Forester, but it's too bad they didn't get the XT...

You can't get a non-AWD Subaru. Your friends need to do a little better research before making a $20,000+ purchase.

Yeah I told him that the dealer salesman must have been "fibbing" since "I don't think you can buy a Subaru that isn't AWD."

WTF? All Subarus have AWD. The turbo Forester XT (with AWD ;) ) is the freakin' bomb!

Indeed. I'm actually trying to get work to pick one up for me as a company vehicle :p

I'd like to go with a manual, but most owner comments about the clutch are less than impressive. Many owners and people who have test drove them are saying that the auto is the better choice.

I hope he has better luck with it than my friend who owns one. He's had that thing in the shop more times than I would care to admit to if I owned the car.

What's the performance hit with the auto?

From what I can tell from reviews and owner comments, the 5 speed is good for mid 6 second 0-60 sprint without completing ragging the thing, the auto comes in about half a second slower right around the 7 second mark.

Not bad for a little compact SUV.

That's what I thought?
Even the Justy?
Let me rephrase that: all new Subarus have come standard with AWD since model year 1996. It used to be an option.

Forester only has one r.

There are guys over in NASIOC putting in the Sti 6 speed in their Fxts....and end of this year sooby officially has the FXT-Sti coming in. The original 5 speed is a crappy gearbox at least with the wrx....much less robust than the 4eat tranny.
