A friend is selling me an unlocked iPhone

What do I need to know before I buy it? Is it worth it? Is there a risk of the iPhone becoming locked again via updates? Are there any limitations with an unlocked iPhone?

Thanks in advance.

Don't update it till there's a hack for the revised OS.

Can you explain a little bit more? I am a newbie when it comes to the iPhone. I understand the part about not updating it, but what do you mean "revised OS"?

What kind of iPhone? Original, 3G, 3GS? If it's unlocked and jailbroken... updating it will remove the unlock and jailbreak, there's tutorials out there to unlock and jailbreak. I think it's called yell0wsnow / ultrasnow, I'm not really in the loop. My iphone is still on 2.x and I just used QuickPWN with firmware file and 2 baseband's, it was real simple.

redsn0w is another name.

iTunes will sync with your phone when you hook it up to your PC, and tell you there's an OS upgrade available.

Unless there's a hack for the OS they're suggesting, don't allow iTunes to upgrade the OS.

you can upgrade/downgrade to any version (1.x, 2.x, 3.x) on an iphone 2G, because each version allows jailbreaking and unlocking.

the only "limitation" that i know of is that if a new update comes out, you'll have to wait for the dev team (or other people) to say if its safe to update. most of the time, it isnt, but the most recent update, 3.0.0 to 3.0.1. is safe for all i know (i tried it on mine and my jailbroken stuff was preserved).

also, what kind of iphone will you be using?

Depends how the phone was unlocked. If it's factory or carrier unlocked then performing updates will not change this. As mine is carrier unlocked and I have no problems updating whenever there is one.

Did your friend unlock it himself? If so, it's probably jailbroken, and thus there's a risk of semi-bricking it with a software update. I'd wait until the Dev Team (previously mentioned in this thread) gives the all-clear on 3.0.1 if indeed it's self-hacked/jailbroken.

Visual Voicemail probably won't work. As others have said you may have to wait a few days for upgrading the firmware after a new release. Usually that's not a big deal. You will have to unlock/jailbreak the phone each time you update the firmware. Usually this is a simple process but not always. Sometimes the update just doesn't go quite right. I've had issues a couple times with my own phone and my wife's as well. Everything always worked out at the end but there were a few hairy moments and a day or two without the phone.

Right now you can upgrade to 3.0.1 and keep the unlock without an issue. In the future however there's no telling what can happen. Just do it now...no need to continue worrying. There probably won't be major feature bumps until 4.0, and who knows when that'll be.

Plus I'm sure that there must be adventurous individuals out there trying to shoehorn Android onto an iPhone, like what they've done with some other non-Android devices.
