i mean, i'm in the same boat, my wife doesn't get along with his wife and i don't feel like that should have anything to do with us being friends.

What is it about "friend" dynamics? When you're single, you have single friends. When you're married (or together with someone as a couple), you have "couple" friends. When you have kids, you move out of that orbit and into the "couples with kids" group. When you're with someone, it complicates the picture because you have to take the other person's feelings into account or it will cause potentially a lot of friction in the relationship (ok, no snide remarks about the swinging..)
