Just wondering. I've got a spare BNIB GTX950 2GB OC card I could gift him for Christmas. Just wondering if that card would be worth giving him. He's got a non-overclocked 45nm Core2Quad still, with I think 8GB RAM, and Windows 7. He's a PC and console gamer. D3 on PC, mostly, and a few others.

His current card (last time we spoke) was a GTX460 2GB card, that I hooked him up with years and years ago, pretty-much.

I posed this question in another thread, and the response I got was, "that should be a good upgrade".

But my question in this thread, is more along the lines of, should I spend more money, and get him a GTX1050 2GB (Probably MSI Gaming, $135) or 1050ti 4GB (probably the Zotac "shorty", $160).

I paid like $120 for the MSI GTX950 2GB OC card. At the time, list price was $170, they were like $50 off.

Of course now, the 1050(ti) cards are out, and the GTX950 is "old hat".

His PSU is a RaidMax "Thunder V2" PSU, which got a mediocre but not bad review on JonnyGuru's site a few months back. I installed it for him last year. It has four PCI-E 6+2 pins, on two strings. (I recently deployed one of them myself for a pair of R9 270X 2GB cards, in my Thuban 1045T rig, for the Dec. F@H race.)

I don't really have the money to be spending more than $100, maybe $150 on him this Christmas. (Not like he ever gets me anything expensive. He did get me UT3 one Christmas, it was like $60. Then I never played it. :( )

I mean, I already have the GTX950 2GB card, so that's that, it wouldn't be an additional expenditure this month. But by the same token, I could re-arrange my rigs, and pull the two other GTX950 2GB cards (I have three total), and put them all in one machine, for more F@H power. I might do that, if I get ambitious, and/or TomsHardware gets close during the race.

Edit: I've got an R7 250X, I think 2GB DDR3 model. Is that any faster than a GTX460 2GB model? Roughly, I think an R7 250X, is a 7770, but this one has DDR3, and his GTX460 2GB has GDDR5, I think, or maybe back then, they just had GDDR3.

Edit: I think that this is his card:

Product specs say GDDR5, so that's pretty likely to be faster than my 250X DDR3 card.

Edit: Hmm, some of those reviews aren't very good. Apparently, that's not a very well-engineered GTX460 card, especially with the cooling. Some people mentioned crashes. The last review was from 2011. I think I might have sold him that card new, back in 2012-2013.

Time for an upgrade!

Edit: Newegg on ebay, has a PNY "shorty" 4GB 1050 ti for $137.99 + $4.99 ship, and they've got a VisionTek 4GB RX 470 "blower" model, for $159.99 + $4.99 ship.

If I were to buy one, which one would be better? Would the RX 470 be overkill for a Core2Quad?

with no overclock a gtx960, 1050ti and 470 would be overkill.
A gtx1050 is as fast card for a non overclocked core 2 quad.
With my q9550 @4.0 my gtx960 was not fully utilized all the time,it depended on the game.
Don't waste money,just give him the gtx1050.
that's my vote.

Check the PSU first, and if it's OK then just give him the GTX 950. I'm sure anything more recent will just bottleneck with a Core2Quad.

RX 470 would be the best price for performance no doubt, but I do think it will be overkill for his processor. I think your best bet would be to give him your GTX 950 or buy him a 1050 4gb. Don't buy a card with 2GB. even on low end models vram is going to be becoming bottleneck and it already is.

gtx460 to gtx950 is a big a upgrade, also for a C2Q it's probably not worth investing much anyway, so I think the 950 would make more sense (250X DDR3 is likely to be slower than the GTX 460 in many games)

According to TPU (GPU database), 950 is 90% faster than GTX 460. Sounds like a good upgrade to me. VRAM is low, but Diablo 3 isn't exactly a memory hog.

The OP's friend probably should replace his system sometime in the near future.

Give him the GTX 950 you already have, it will be a huge upgrade for him more than 2x performance.

I say you give him the GTX 950. While I'm all for sticking overpowered GPUs in ancient computers (I think I've mentioned my Fury X + C2Q Q9450 combo enough times), getting CPU frequencies to match is a must. I saw huge gains going from 2,66GHz to 3,52 with the Fury X.

I'm thinking of ordering that card for him, and getting it to him ASAP, with the condition that if I get him the card, that he crunches for TeAm Anandtech (Team #198) in Folding@Home.

Since I'm now using all three of my GTX950 2GB OC cards to crunch for the F@H Dec. Holiday race right now, and could still use some more firepower.

Edit: While I'm at it, I could do the same for another friend of mine, that wants to get into PC Gaming, and has an Athlon II X4 640 3.0Ghz quad-core, 16GB of DDR2, and currently has a GT610 card.

He's done DC for me one other winter season, maybe I can get him to do it again, for a few years in a row this time.

1050ti is overkill. And i am all for using powefull gpu in old brigs because its dirt cheap and easy. But that 950 is plenty. That and help him oc that old core 2.

For that price (140.00 for a 1050Ti), if your friend has a psu with a six pin, I would go with a RX470. Prices are really good on them now. The only reason I would go lower than that, either from nVidia or AMD, is if I needed a card without a six pin connector. He may be cpu bound, but you can always crank up the details or save the card for a future upgrade.

Edit: if you already have the GTX950, then you should just give him that. It is a perfectly fine card for a core 2 cpu. I also would not worry about the vram of only 2gb on such a low end system. He is hardly going to be playing the latest AAA games on ultra anyway.

Yup. C2Q will hold him back, so no need for higher than a 950, but you might as well make it punch as hard as it can with a CPU OC.

I'm not sure sure about the RX 470 4GB cards. The only cheap one is $159.99 + $4.99 ship from Newegg, and it's a VisionTek "blower" model. That and the crappy PowerColor models, which I'm not a fan of either.

I've had fairly good luck with MSI so far (maker of that 1050ti I linked).

Plus, I think he's an "NVidia gamer". Plays lots of Blizzard games, which generally run better on NV.
