Someone I haven't seen since high school is visiting from out of town. It turns out this friend is a pretty famous graffiti artist. We went out for drinks and I asked the friend to paint something on the wall in my apartment, to which they agreed.

Question: Would you offer money? The person is an (extremely talented) artist by profession, but I don't know how well they are doing money-wise.

If you asked them, and they aren't your good friend, you should definitely offer to pay.

Pay him in more Beer and hope he forgets...

Pay him a bit. Any professional should be paid, even if they are a friend.

I think you should just show em a good time.

Drinks, night out on the town, etc..

I'd offer a little payment in addition to drinks and whatever you covered. It's hard out there for an artist.

After he finishes doing Graffiti on your wall, call the cops on him that way you don't have to pay him once he's arrested.

Drinks, pizza, and the paint cost. You can usually lowball someone on the compensation when it's food vs. cash, plus they appreciate it more for some reason. Plus playing the radio and shooting the **** while doing it makes it go from a chore to hanging out and having fun.

You should definitely offer to pay him something. Not offering pretty much means you don't value what he did for you.

Pay for his supplies and a decent meal, then afterwards offer a bit of money.

I say definitely, not a huge amount, but yes, regardless of if he says no

So I should insist on giving money? The friend is in town from Europe, so should I give cash? How much would you say?

Also, I might only live in this apartment for another year. Which means when I move out I will have to paint over the work to get the walls white again... I'd feel terrible doing that. Any alternatives? Like some kind of surface that is large enough, yet portable for when I move?

When we were drinking I offered to pay for supplies but my friend said no. At minimum I will buy some meals and drinks, but still wondering if it will seem weird to offer to pay. I think it's kind of awkward situation, I don't want to seem like I'm trying to look like a big shot. (Keep in mind the friend could possibly be making more money than me, I have no idea and don't really care to know).
