Hopefully you have enough coverage or financial resources when his fire insurance company comes after you for indemnity.

Just an update.

So, my friend's power went out and he smelt burning so he called the electric co, and they came out. Apparently, they said his electrics would need inspection before they could reconnect him - so they just left him without power. No time when they would come back or anything.

Hell, they even took the meter away. No idea what for - it wasn't like he was stealing it.

Even though I was out most of the day, he left me a load of voice mails. Evenutally he got through to me - he told me it was sorted. He'd managed to get the power back on.

Nice work

So, I have to admit it - for someone who doesn't know much about electrics - that's pretty creative.

No doubt the electric co will try and complain about him 'stealing' electricity - but if they don't want to meter it, that's their problem isn't it?

Why not use hacksaw blades?

Use an amprobe to see what leg is taking most of the load and put the blade on that line. This way the meter is in place and running - albeit slower.

I kid about the hacksaw blade! A safe crook will use a proper shunt material to carry the bypass current and always use anti-oxidant compound on the connections. ;)

But, a number of crooks have been caught this way (by shunting the meter).

What they hadn't realised was that the electric co knew that the property supplied by that meter was unoccupied - and therefore any usage immediately raised a red flag :)

I worked for the local electric company for 7 years. The meter crews used to take some GREAT pix of pirated installations...and sometimes, the fires that resulted. Jumper cables are a pretty common way of doing this, but if you get caught, it can result in some pretty steep fines and/or jail time, as well as losing your electric service for a set period of time.
