Frankly i don't know a lot about pentium because i have alway's bought AMD. He currently has a pentium PII 700 on a BH6 baord ( i believe that's what it is) and want's to get a board that has a higher bus speed (his is 66), and get a 1 gig processor or higher. I would like some recomendations on a good pentium motherboard that will support the above requirements. And whatever the suggetions may be he would like to stay away from Rambus. Looking for stability and upgradability. (who isn't, right?)

Thank's,
Bo

There is really no upgradability after a p3 1.x ghz.. they might produce something faster but still a p4 is faster...

You can get a P4 that uses SDRAM but it wont be as fast..

If he really wants a P3, look into the Asus TUSL2 that supports the newer p3 tualatins.. but if he really wants intel based, p4 is faster but amd may be a better value.

It'd be a lot easier for him to buy something amd and fit those requirements. Try and sway him if you can. It'd probaby be cheaper too.

Just my $0.02.

He hasn't limited his choices to a P3. I am trying to find for him the better bang for the buck for his upgrade. I personally prefer AMD and told him my reasons why, but he want's to stick with Intel. At first looking at pricewatch i see the P4 1.4 is one of the cheaper processors out right now for anything over 1. gig. I will check out the Asus TUSL2.
What are some good P4 boards? and do they require rambus?

Seems so...

<< pentium PII 700 >>

PII only went up to 400

<< BH6 baord ( i believe that's what it is) and want's to get a board that has a higher bus speed (his is 66 >>

BH6 is 100 FSB. It can also run 133 FSB depending on the revision.

He can run a 1 Gig PIII or CeleronII @ 100 FSB on this board. A cheap upgrade would be a CeleronII 800-1000. Check with him again to see exactly what he has. Maybe he has a Celeron 700/66 FSB now???

The man obviosly wants a p3 and if that is what he wants then more power to him. I wish people
would quit trying to talk people out of getting a pentium. You really have no right too. As for me
I have a p3 and when I upgrade it will be a p4. I am very happy with intel and see no reason to switch
to AMD. As for the original post a p4 with pc133 will be the best value for him. Go to www.mwave.com and
you will find whatever you want there at a reasonable price. As far as motherboards go, I would stick with ASUS.
They are very stable and fast. I believe that asus motherboard that goes with the p4 pc133 is the p4B. Good luck!

Just remember the "other" upgrades needed for a P4.........
Power supply, probably the case, possibly the video card (AGP Pro).....etc...
But I agree....I'm an Intel man and my next upgrade will be Intel also.........

A lot of CPU programs read the Celeron as a P2! That could be the reason u think ur friend has a 700mhz P2!

<< old fart your wrong. pentium 2 went up to 450mhz. i had one >>

Yeah, now that I think of it, the 450 was available in both a PII/PIII. BTW, your reply should read:
oldfart, you're wrong. Pentium 2 went up to 450mhz. I had one. :)

Bottom line is a BH6 (BX chipset) can be upgraded to a fairly fast level of processor without breaking the bank.
