CHICAGO -- Ford Motor Co. Chairman and Chief Executive Bill Ford Jr. has joined the board of eBay Inc., the online auction company said late Wednesday.
EBay isn't replacing an existing board member, but simply expanding its board to eleven members, eBay spokesman Hani Durzy said, adding that Ford has leadership and business strategy skills.
"What he's done at Ford Motor Company would benefit any board. We're really pleased to have him," Durzy said.
Ebay, which is based in San Jose, Calif., has a growing auto business, but Durzy said that there's no specific connection between that business and the decision to appoint Ford, who has been CEO at the Dearborn, Mich.-based auto company since 2001.
Consumers and dealers sell vehicles and vehicle parts through eBay's vehicle site, eBay Motors. EBay Motors had gross merchandise volume of $14.3 billion for the quarter that ended June 30, up from the prior year's $9.8 billion. The company defines gross merchandise volume as the total value of all successfully closed listings on its trading sites.
