Man Eats Cocaine From Brother's Butt, Dies

A South Carolina man's brother died after police said he was forced to eat cocaine hidden in his brother's backside.
Both brothers were taken into custody on allegations they had drugs in their car.
But police told Charleston, S.C., TV station WCIV there were additional drugs hidden in 23-year-old Deangelo Mitchell's backside.
Officers said Deangelo Mitchell convinced his brother, 20-year-old Wayne Mitchell, to swallow the ounce of cocaine to hide the evidence. He died soon afterward.
"It's sickening," North Charleston Police Chief Jon Zumalt told WCIV. "I got upset when I saw the thing. I was pretty shocked on it."
Deangelo Mitchell already bonded out of jail on the drug charge, but now police are looking for him again on charges of involuntary manslaughter.

through the stomach is absorbed much faster compared to snorting which is much slower than swallowing. people tend to swallow grams or even ounces which in by its self is enough to kill you if you snort it.

Odd eating stuff is usually slower than other methods of taking drugs. I don't really know much about coke or snorting though.

On ingestion, absorption is delayed due to the low pH in the stomach, leading to a maximum concentration in the blood after 45 to 90 minutes.

After insufflation (the medical term for 'snorting'), the maximum concentration in the blood (well, plasma, actually) is reached after about 30 to 120 minutes, although mostly on the lower time scale.

(Why the hell would you insufflate it if it were the other way around? Because it looks cool?). Admittedly, ingesting a larger amount of coke would probably lead to an earlier plasma peak because of constriction of the blood vessels in the nasal mucosa (the inner lining of the nose) limiting absorption into the bloodstream

Effects: hypertension (high blood pressure), tachycardia (high heart rate), constriction of the blood vessels around the heart (myocardium), all sorts of muscle effects (spasms, tremors, rigidity) >> brain haemmorhage, myocardial infarction are early effects (cocnurrently with tachycardia eand hypertension, in later phases come rhadbomyolysis (muscle tissue breakdown) and renal insufficiency. Shitty way to die.

And for what it's worth: 1 gram of cocaine is enough to kill an inexperienced user; 5 grams is regularly fatal for even the most hardened ones. Here in Holland, it is rumored it was 450 grams (insane amount), in the US news outlets, it's gone dowen to an ounce, which is about 28 grams if I'm not mistaken. Still very much deadly. The only thing saving most users is the fact that they get very impure cocaine --- one of the few instanced in which being frauded actually saves your life.

how is that involuntary manslaughter anyways? Thats a trumped up charge. The guy ate the blow using his own free will. Unless they were claiming he said hey eat this chocolate candy its yummy.
