a flash, then icons change

i am running windows 98se - after being on for a while my screen flashes and it seems like random icons are changed to like, desktop, or outlook - also, it almost never fails when i click on 'my computer' and C: before i can get down to 'program files' the screen flashes, but i notice none of the wierd icon thing -

Give a little more specific info for your problem like your system configuration and when exactly this occurs. Initially it sounds like you have a virus, but a few other things could be the cause of this...More info please.

im not sure what system configuration means - it is a PIII733 256mb voodoo4 4500 - ive been noticing these, like, hiccups - usually when i open an explorer window - like the 'my comp' 'C;',i described - about the time i scroll down to program files, the screen blinks and its back at the top of C: - sometimes it will do it on its own, without me opening anything - thats usually when i notice the icon thing - theres a specific game i have, NHRA2, that i put the game icon, and the multiplayer icon on quick launch - and those two icons change to a exe icon, and a ms (dat?) icon - then the others ive noticed recently, PSP files turn into desktop icons, and most recently, outlook express icons -
