Preface:
I have tried to use several R3xx based video cards in the past 1.5 years. Included are the R9500 Pro, 9600 Pro, 9700 Pro, and my shiny new 9800 NP. All 4 of these cards have caused my monitor to flicker a lot in the right two corners of the screen and a little in between the corners. This flickering resembles refresh rate flicker but only on the right side of my monitor. It was not catastrophic but it was bothersome to say the least. It was bad enough that I returned them all (except the 9800 NP) and purchased cards from the competition that did not cause the same flickering on the same monitor while installed in the same rig.
Very strange eh? Well, I was going to do the same thing with the 9800 NP, but I liked it too much and my games have never looked so good at such high speeds. So I decided to find a way to fix the problem so I could keep it.
The Fix:
Go into the Advanced Display Properties, select the Displays tab, click on the Monitor box, unselect Use DDC Information, set the max. refresh rates for the various resolutions you will use manually, and apply the new settings. The results? No flickering on the right side of my CRT!!!
I wish I had found out about this a long time ago. I could have saved myself a lot of time and frustration. 🙂
