its only happened a few times but its really pissing me off. I had no issues before getting the mobo and cpu in sig. before I had a 2500k and msi mobo with all other hardware and OS being the same.

even the first day after installing new cpu and mobo it blue screened on me. and yes I had done a fresh install of Win 8.1 and the mobo bio and drivers are up to date.

the pc is just at idle when this happens and the crashes are all showing ntoskrnl.exe as the cause but the crashes seem to have different reasons.

my hard drive and memory are fine and my exact memory is even listed on compatibly list for my mobo.

Try to set back your RAM either to 1333Mhz or 1066Mhz or maybe I suspect its a CPU Power Management Feature issue. Also you can try to disable Intel C State feature in your BIOS.

I have my ram on its XMP settings. and if I disable C states wont that make it run faster just doing nothing?

I did just install the very latest bios after starting this thread since there was one released a month after I had everything set up. maybe that will help.

My old rig crashed at idle. Then it progressed to not powering on all the time. Found the voltage regulation circuits had exploded under the heatsink that surrounds the CPU socket.

What are your sleep settings like toyota?

Does it seem like it's crashing about the time it should be going to sleep?

Ok, if you're sure it's not that then it's a bad driver or bad stick of RAM.
it was not the ram as it was perfect in tests and no issues for the nearly 2 years I used it with the 2500k.

its been a month now and no crashes since that one on the 28th. I changed the voltage to auto and that seems to have done the trick. its odd that it was always fine with hours of gaming or testing but just give a random crash out of the blue while doing nothing at all.

thinking back I had the same issue 2.5 years ago when I first oced the 2500k setup and putting it on auto voltage fixed its random crashing at idle too.

So every time you take voltage off Auto your computer starts crashing. Might want to start remembering that.

so does everyone that uses manual or adaptive core voltage get crashes at idle? of course not.

its just odd that my pc was fine under load but randomly go poof with various crashes when doing nothing.

So my question would be were you adjusting the voltage up or down? I have never had the adjustment of memory voltage make any noticeable difference.

I am only talking about cpu voltage and I raised it of course since I was increasing the speed of the cpu. again no issues ever under load but a couple random crashes a month at idle. and it was idling at stock speeds and stock voltage so that's why I am confused as to what the issue could be.

for both the 4770k and 2500k I ended up just putting the turbo at 4.4 and leaving everything else auto and they work fine.

LOL, I see that now. Not sure how I got memory voltage in my head.

I know on my board I did some overclocking when I first got it, just to see what she'd do, and once I had to start pushing her above auto voltage there weren't many Mhz left. I know sites say that they could get the same speed at lower voltage when set to manual, but that did not seem to be the case for me.

Glad it's running fine.

running 4.4 on auto, the 4770k is hitting 1.25 under load in the Intel Extreme Utility stress test. during the Asus Real Bench it will hit 1.32 about 7 or 8 times for about 1 second each time during the "heavy multi tasking" test. temps will just touch 78 C or so for max a couple of times. Crysis 3 is the most cpu intensive game I have and it never goes over 1.25 there and will hit max temp of 65 C testing at 1280.
