Well in my comp I have one fan thats attached to the case and it aims directyl over the heatsink, I was wondering if it were fine to get another fan and attach it on the heatsink, and there is also another spot on the case beside the heatsink to add another fan. So will it be alright to have 3 fans running inside my comp 2 of them aiming at the heatsink.............is there such a thing as too cold?

What kind of fans should I be looking for or will any do? Its an old computer(4 years), but it burned out on me and I dont wanna go thru hell fixing it again.....Specs: AMD athlon XP 1800+, 512mb DDR ram, 60GB HD, Nvdia Fx5200.

Also is there a way to check the computer's temperature and where should it be around?

Oh for some reason, my 3 pin connectors on the motherboard r fried and I can only connect 4 pin fans to the PSU directyl...........will it matter if I hook up 2-3 fans onto the PSU?

Thanks.

You definatly want to have a fan on the heatsink for your CPU, what kind of heatsink do you have? If the 3 pin fan header on your Motherboard doesn't work, that could be a problem, as some motherboards won't boot up if the don't detect a CPU fan. You can run 3 fans off of your PSU, thats fine, what PSU do you have? There are programs such as motherboard monitor 5 that you can use to monitor your temps. I would recomend not trying to run the computer before having a fan on the CPU heatsink, as Athlon XP's do not have thermal protection and can burn themselves up if not cooled enough..if you aren't sure what you're doing, you may want to have somebody that does take a look at everything before starting it back up.

Ya I know, it does run fine without a fasn connected to the mobo, the PSU I have is a 500W, I decided I'll buy a 3 pin to 4pin connector and use the 3 pin fan and put it on the heatsink, then buy another fan and attach it to the case and then the PSU. What I was worried abotu was the comp getting too cold because of the 3 fans.......................and can you plz link me to the program so I can download.

Thanks.

You should always have a fan attached to the heat sink! You also should have at least 1 exhaust fan, which would more than likely go in the back of the case. Having another fan attached to the case, blowing down onto the heat sink is fine.

There is no such thing as too cold for a computer until you get down to the dew point (water will start forming on your computer parts), but that won't happen with just fans for cooling.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it's a problem to connect 3 fans to the PSU.

No, there shouldn't be a problem, unless the PSU can't handle the power draw.

There is such a thing as too cold... I had my CPU cold enough that the computer would not POST rite. (I was ducting -15 °C air directly on the HSF) :p

So is there a program that will allow me to monitor my temperature? and also wut temperature shud it be at? I think I shud just put a fan over the heatsink and the one on the case blowing on the heatsink as well.........shud beenuff, iz not a strong comp.

alrignt first off, the air temp your case fans put out is the temperature of the room where the computer is. unless your room is 50 below, your fine. your heatsink fan puts out air temp the same as the inside of the case. the only way you can really get too cold is with water cooling

Well I'm using normal fans, no water cooling.....so 3 shud be fine I suppose.

Not true...
Water cooling won't get too cold unless you are cooling the water below 0 °C somehow. ;)

Phase change, Peltiers... are the only way you can get "too cold".

Well, you're supposed to use screws, not nails... But, it shouldn't matter what metal the screw is, if that's what you're asking.

Metal screw are fine. Whatever kind. Make sure the fan is secure to the heatsink and not loose. Also, watch how the screws spread apart the fins of the heatsink. If the screw you use is too wide, it can bend and then break the fins of the heatsink. Your BIOS should have a temp monitor (PC Health) or something like that.

Do a google seadh for Motherboard Monitor, or AIDA32. Both will monitor your case temps. For an Athlon XP, 40 degrees Celsius is fine. You can go higher or lower.
