I'm looking to buy one so I was hoping to get some help.

This is the one I think i'm going to get: LINK

Anybody have any personal experience with this drive?

Also, what media do you recommend?

What software can I use to "backup" my dvds?

Last question...what is a dual layer burner and should I wait to get one?

Thanks ATot.

Unless you're strapped for cash, I'd wait and get a dual layer which should be out in a month or two. Or just find a super cheap deal on a 8 speed burner for now, then upgrade when dual layer comes out.

There is tons of software to backup your DVD's. You can use DVD shrink, pinnacle instant copy, Nero, Etc.

If you can wait though, just get a dual layer when they come out.....someone had a link to a pre-order in hot deals.

I'm going to pick up a $99 Lite-on from Newegg. The only real use I have is large data disks (backing up photos and such). I don't need dual layer.

DVD Shrink is the best to back up DVDs.

Dual Layer...they will be pretty expensive, and I heard the media will be anywhere from 4-8 dollars a disc.

Ritek RiDATA from here:

Rima.com">http://www.rima.com[/S</a>

I've used 300 or so Ritek RiDATA DVD-R 4x media and have had 1 coaster out of 300. And it was my fault... I ran too many things on my computer and it locked up.

I'm not sure which is better + or -, but I do know - is more compatible with dvd players, so I went that route.

Oh and my DVD burner is a Sony DRU500AX

save your money.. Find a Lite-on 451s and flash-hack it to an 851s.

Then you have the same (better?) burner for half the price
