1.) Are all the retail HSF in the Athlon xp series the same model?

2.) If they are what is the model of the cooler master that comes with them?

I want to get a new heatsink and fan for my computer because the volcano 5 is too loud. I have an OEM xp 1500+ so nothign came with it. I want the retail HSF that comes with the XP series. Could anyone tell me the model of it? Thanks.

You think the Volcano 5 is loud? The retail HSF isn't a purring kitten, let me tell you. I have a retail 1700+ that came with a CoolerMaster heatsink and a 60mm CoolerMaster-badged fan, which turns out to actually be a 28cfm/38dBA Delta fan. Pretty loud for the meagre cooling it put out. I would recommend you stick with the Volcano 5, and find a quieter fan to stick on top. People recommend 80mm Panaflo L1As or, if you need a stronger solution, a Panaflo H1A. I went with a 60mm to 80mm adapter and a Panaflo H1A, it worked fairly well. Obviously the best solution is to get an AX-7 and I may get around to that, but as you said, it's pretty expensive having to keep buying heatsinks.

Where did you get the retail cpu? All the retail XP's I've seen have come with relatively low speed/low noise fans. Certainly nothing close to a delta.

I have the retail XP heatsink and I think it is quiet, but maybe I am wrong because it is not super quiet like I imagine the retail P4 heatsink. Could someone tell me what they have found.

I have the retail athlon xp hs/f. Will this suggested hs/f be quieter than the retail?

FWIW, I coulda sworn that the retail HSFs were from Taisol. The fan is indeed a Delta, but one with a low CFM and RPM rating (60x60x10mm).

Take a look here at the two photos "AMD_heatsink1.jpg" & "AMD_heatsink2.jpg"

The CPU the heatsink is cooling is an XP1800+ BTW.

In some little computer store here in London, Canada. The fan says CoolerMaster on it, but if you take it off and flip it around, it said Delta and gave a Delta part number, which I managed to reference on their website. 28cfm/38dBA is relatively low speed/low noise, depending on who you ask. I think it's pretty loud, but I think the Panaflo H1A is loud too.

BTW, my 1700+ HSF doesn't look like the pictures that were posted above. The heatsink is longer than it is wide, and the fan I have doesn't have as many blades.

I know CoolerMaster makes heatpipes and all sorts of neato heatsinks, but what I got with my computer, really sucks.

The Athlon XP HSFs are either made by Taisol or Coolermaster. In any case, they have similar designs. As for the fans, they're made by Delta, and are about 28cfm as mentioned. These are by no means low speed, in fact they're the fastest and highest performing fans of their size. If you go to any of the other major fan manufacturer's websites(Panaflo, Sunon, Nidec, etc) you won't find anything of that size(60x60x10) running faster or getting more airflow. The Delta fan is the best in its class.

If you want a cheap HSF that's retail just get a Coolermaster or Taisol that's rated for your CPU. The XP1500+ is the slowest and coolest Athlon XP out there, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem. From the Coolermaster website, all these would work
DP5 6H51-A1(Palomino Athlon XP up to 1500+)
DP5-6H11-A1(Palomino Athlon XP up to 1500+)
EP5-6I11-A1(Athlon XP up to 1800+)
EP5-6I51-A1(Athlon XP up to 1700+)
SP5-6G31C-A1(Athlon XP up to 2100+)
DP5-5G11B-A1(Athlon XP up to 1500+)
DP5-6I11A(Palomino Athlon XP up to 1800+)
DP5-6131A-A1(Palomino Athlon XP up to 1800+)
DP5-6J31C-A1(Palomino Athlon XP up to 2200+)

As for Taisol, according to their website, all their Socket-A coolers would fit the bill for you.
