hi,

* why is it, that in XP the System-Control folder NEVER is set to
'show Icons', but always randomly switches between view as 'icons'
(which i prefer), and 'view small icons' etc....this is the only
folder i ALWAYS have to change that back after a, say, a few reboots

[ i mean the folder view of 'control-panel' constantly changes. If i switch the view to 'Icons'..soon afterwards i open the folder again and the view is switched to 'small icons' etc.....]

* why is it, that, when i need the command prompt and type
'command'...i get into an extremely SLOW Dos/Command emulation where
NOTHING, not even 'doskey' works right....why is the command/Dos
emulation so much slower under XP than under 98...even with a
resonable (XP1900) system ???

* how can i schedule a internet logoff (dialup) and/or a system
shutdown with the task scheduler ? Say: "logoff and shutdown system at
9:00am" ??? In once read something about it somewhere...but this
method didn't work...

thanks

1. Don't know what you are referring to.

2. Use cmd

3. I'm sure you can, not sure how.

1. havent noticed this on my installs

2. Use CMD, I do and dont have any slowness....

3. Its probably something like setting an application to auto start at a certain time, like Iexplore.exe and then enable it to automatically dial the connection, then set another task to kill the iexplore.exe at a certain time (pskill from sysinternals might work) and then enable the 'close connection when no longer needed' in IE...

i remember there was some very easy dll call. You had to enter the call for it shut down the PC in task manager, but the problem was something with privileges. Which is weird, because i do of course have admin privileges on my comp. It was very simple...but i could never add the schedule in taskmanager...

A simple shutdown for the OS might be able to use shutgui from the NT4 resource kit (prob find on google.com or I can email it later) with some command line switches to shutdown,

Shutdown.exe is included with winXP, a slightly different version is on the win2k resource disc.

"shutdown /L" should work

1. works for me
2. command is an emulated 16-bit environment. win9x is natively crappy, but the NT series has to emulate the crappiness. cmd already has up/down arrow keys to go through old commands, and even allows scrolling.

I found this:

http://www.tweakxp.com/display.aspx?id=2087

By default, Windows Explorer will remember your view settings for 400 views. After that it's "catch as catch can" . To reset and change the memory to 1000 views, do this:

1)Delete the following two keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU and

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags

2) Then go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
and add a DWORD called
BagMRU Size
and give it a value of
000003e8

Then go to :-

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam
make a DWORD called
BagMRU Size
and give it a value of
000003e8
