A few questions about the PSP

Hello,

Some of you know that I despise Sony, their business practices, their horizontal and vertical integration schemes and proprietary formats... And I do hope they're going to get their butts whipped in the console and Hi-Def DVD format wars.

Nevertheless, as an outsider, I have to say the PSP is a pretty impressive gadget. On paper.

But what exactly can you do with it? Or, to be more precise, are people actually using it to the full extent of its capabilities? I understand it can browse the web and play music and movies (whether UMD-based or not)... and yet I've yet to see something that would make me go and buy one... For instance, I have no idea what are the best games available for it... any *good* FPS, like the Doom/Quake/Unreal series? What is the battery situation (how much does it last, what are the costs for replacing it etc.)? Can it be hacked into running a usable Windows, not just by hobbyists, but by regular users?

it's best used for doing anything other than playing actual psp games.

it's best used as a portable emulator that can run home-brew applications. all you have to do is google for hacking the psp and tons of links will come up.

Well, it's a gaming system. But being a media player is it's strong suit with it's large bright screen, and reletively poor selection of games.

That said, thanks to the R4DS, my DS is also a media player. :D

Or as a portable PS1, with the 3.03OE series firmware. ;)

So true
There's a few exceptions, of course.

It can play mp3s, you can convert all kinds of movies including your regular dvd movies to be played from your psp with a free utility, you can play emulator games and psp games from the memory stick... it sounds great on paper but somehow it's as useful as my last PDA. I own 2 and they are collecting dusts. The last time I played it was during a long flight to Japan.

Thanks for the replies so far, can someone comment on real-life battery capacity?
Has anyone here succeeded to install a Windows 9x version on it?

Yeah, but "homebrew" often isn't specific enough to make people stand up and go O RLY?

Mine would get about 4h playing games off the UMD ... if I loaded them off my Memory Stick I could eke out another ~45min or so usually. Ditto for video playback - never really tried audio. IIRC, someone has ported Doom and Quake to it, but not Unreal.

As far as installing a real Windows on it ... the lack of a keyboard or touch-screen interface makes that a pretty ridiculous idea. Why would you want Windows on there anyhow?

My cousin and I were commenting the other day on the fact that the PSP is the best media player that Sony's made since the Walkman since it can actually play MP3s and videos downloaded off the internet. Unlike Sony's other media players. (ATRAC FTL!)
