I've always thought of skipping countries when I grow up, just to see the world. Of course, while thinking that, I thought of ways one might get out of the USA to other countries. I probably will never do any of these things, but I figured I would ask.
1. Say I own my own plane and I have the proper certification to fly. Is there anything stopping me from leaving from a private airfield in the US to a private airfield in Greenland? Would the respective governments have to be notified? I think to get out of the US, you have to notify the Coast Guard, or at least have proper signals and papers proving that you are an American aircraft. How would you get into other countries, however? Would it be as simple as flying into their airspace? I would think not, since you could risk being shot down.
2. What is to stop one from stowing away on an import/export ship? I know a few people in import/export who go on the ships, so what's to stop me from excercising my friendliness with those people and stowing away on a ship, and the leaving when I get to another country? Kind of like in "The Bourne Identity." He is picked up by a fishing boat and winds up in Switzerland or Sweden, and no one would have ever known the difference.
3. What is to stop someone who owns their own boat from docking in another country, apart from fuel costs? What about forcefully boarding someone else's boat and commandeering it?
Like I said, I don't plan on becoming a pirate or stow-away, I am just curious about different ways to skip country in case I ever decide to live "off-the-grid" for a few years and drift around Europe ;-)
