a few questions about burning DVDs

i'm just recently interested in buying a dvd burner, i think i'm going to go for an external 16x liteon. what is the main difference between dvd-r and dvd+r? i read that some are supported by certain companies and the others arent, something random like that. what media would be the best to use for making playstation 2 backups as well as burning my own movies to be used on my panasonic dvd player? thanks.

Don't worry about which format... why not get a burner that supports BOTH formats, which is almost any good burner these days?

I believe DVD+R is taking over the market, much like VHS did over Beta. DVD-R technology seems to be falling behind, or at best is playing catchup to DVD+R.

Still, like I mentioned, just get a burner that does both.

they will be overtaken by blu-ray and/or hd-dvd before one will fully win the battle

I fully support the advancement of blu-ray technology, but I think DVD+/-R technology will be about as dead with the rise of blu-ray as CD-R technology is today with the rise of affordable DVD+/-R availability.

In other words, it may not be considered bleeding edge, but it will definately have a market share and a widespread established base. DVD+/-R technology will not dissapear overnight just because blu-ray shows up, anymore then CD-R technology has dissapeared (which it surely hasn't).
