A few questions about burning CDs...

These are pretty basic...

1) Windows 7 media player seems needlessly convoluted for burning CDs. Any freeware software out there that anyone recommends?

2) What kind of media do most use for simple .mp3 burning... Does it matter? Do RWs give worse results than plain old readables? Does it matter? Are some CDs better than others? Do they ever need to be formatted?

Thanks for help...

CD-RWs would be more convenient inasmuch as I can change songs around later...

Any reason you recommend CD-Rs with one time burn capability only? Is it cost? i.e. it's just cheaper to make a coaster and burn a new CD than fix the old?

Try cd-rw and see if your player can read it, if it can, you're good. I did this with an old cd changer and i would make regular audio disks on cd-rw and fill the changer, when i wanted to add new stuff, rewrote one or more of the disks and put them back in. Worked well for me.

2. AVOID MEMOREX MEDIA LIKE THE PLAGUE! Sorry for the caps but that needs to emphasized. Don't fall for the "OHHH! 50 pack of Memorex CDR's on sale for $8!" TDK's a good brand for B&M and Office Depot sells them. A lot of players won't read RW's, hell can you even buy them anymore? LOL It couldn't hurt to get 1 and try it out, but CDR's are cheap and will burn infinitely faster. Also whatever software you end up using if there's a finalize disc option make sure you turn it on. un-finalized discs won't play on anything except the burner you burn them on.

Verbatim media's also pretty good and on sale @ BB from time to time. Memorex will technically work, but I usually have to end up throwing away about 7 out of a 50 pack. Also even the ones that do burn, don't seem to hold up for nothing.

I've used about every brand under the sun (including Memorex, TDK, Verbatim, Sony, etc) and they've all been the same as far as burnability and longevity. I haven't made a coaster since the early days of discs unless it was my fault. Alo of the discs are made by the same manufacturers and the brand labels are applied.

While cd-r disks are very cheap, cd-rw disks are not that expensive, plus can be rewritten many times. cd-r disks for temporary usage is a big waste in my opinion.

The only time i use cd-r disks is when i'm making a permanent backup copy of a whole album.

Memorex gets dics's from CNC I believe, and they're the bottom of the barrel. The TDK's I get are TY discs which are much better. I burn hundreds of audio cd's a month for local bands and stuff. Memorex are a no go, and their DVD's are even worse (if that's possible) A lot of times I'd get a memorex CD or DVD to burn normally, but it wouldn't play back for the person I made it for.

your cdr is not as permanent as you think. Reason I said cdr is because it burns faster and the old one provides some backup protection.

I have like 700 blankk dvdrs. Maybd 10 dvdrw. And I never use the rw. Hell I don't even burn discs anymore.

I think I have 200 cdr and 10 cdrw

by permanent, i only meant i wasn't planning on tossing it when i was tired of listening to the album. When i want to listen to a cd in a cd player or lend one out, i use the copy. The bought cd stays in storage so it doesn't get scratched or broken.

Edit: It seems to me that cd-rs are being used short term and tossed in the trash by some in this thread. I could be interpreting it wrong. Not suggesting cd-rws for burning disks for bands to sell or give out.

btw, i've had luck with any cd-rs made in Japan, like Tiyu Yuden (sp?) and Fuji. Or maybe I'm thinking of dvd-r where it mattered quite a bit back in the early days? Sorry I don't remember if there were quality issues with CD-R as there were with DVD-R...
