A few questions about Asus A8R-MVP

Hey, All,

I'm getting ready to build a new machine. The CPU will be a Socket 939 A64 3000+ for now, with an eye towards upgrading to an X2 chip one of these days. I haven't kept up with the mobo scene for awhile, but doing the requisite mobo research, I've narrowed my choices down and really like the looks of the Asus A8R-MVP.

My questions:

1) Do I have to run 2 graphics card with this board for it to work? Can I use the board without using the "Crossfire" features/technology -- i.e., just with one PCI-E card? I don't game, so I'd like to just use one PCI-E card (from ATI's "compatible" list on their site) if I can do this. The machine will primarily be used for Photoshop and other graphics/desktop publishing apps, and maybe some light video editing, plus who knows what when Vista comes out.

(Before anyone asks, I like the looks of this board because everything else about it is exactly what I want/need. The Crossfire technology is icing on the cake. And yes, I know there are other boards out there, but I'm partial to Asus and would like to stick with what I know right now. And it's the only board they make that appears to have everything I need/want.)

2) Since I haven't kept up with the mobo scene for awhile, are there any known issues with this board I should be aware of? What, if any, complaints have been common or particularly noteworthy?

3) In short, any reason to NOT buy this board?

Thanks in advance for any info/advice.

I would recomend you went for the newer revision of the board instead, the A8R32-MVP. Its got an updated chipset and they seem to have fixed some issues on the previous board.

Im intending to get one myself in a few weeks time :)

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I think I'm gonna find another board ... particularly after I looked at the going rates for a vid card on ATI's "approved list" for Crossfire. Since I'm not gonna be gaming, I don't need a $300 (or more) vid card to do Photoshop & desktop publishing stuff.

Looks like I have more board research to do. Thanks for helping me avoid making a potential mistake. :)

I honeslty would recommend avoiding this mobo like the plague.

I realize some people have had good luck with it, but many people like myself are not very happy with it at all.

As far as i am concerned, Asus released this as a beta test, & then released the final result, the A8R32-MVP for twice the price :|
