A few PS3 games, need confirmation of 1080P support

There are a couple of games for PS3 I was hoping I could get some confirmation on whether they support 1080P or not. For the record I am referring to the games that the PS3 will upscale to 1080P when 720P is disabled in the dashboard.

Battlefield 3
Crysis (not released yet I know)
Crysis 2
007 Blood Stone
Resident Evil Code Veronica X HD
Resident Evil 4

Thanks guys.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe the PS3 scales up games like the 360 does. If the game supports 720P and its disabled, it will revert to the lower default resolution. Most PS3 games are designed for 720P. The easiest way to check is to just look at the box.

I'm not sure if it's universally true, but it has been my experience.

If my memory serves me correctly, for games that support 1080P, one must first disable 720P in the dashboard, then the game will run in 1080P. If the games doesn't support 1080P, then disabling 720P in the dashboard will result in the game being downscaled to 480P, a stupid design IMO and one of the bigger shortcomings of the PS3. I agree looking at the back of the case is a good method, if ya have access to the game, but if I had access to them I wouldn't be asking:biggrin:

Why are you disabling 720p?

Because, in order to play a PS3 game in 1080P that supports it, you have to disable 720P in the dashboard, otherwise the game will run in 720P. Now granted, it's been some time since I've played PS3, but if my memory serves me correctly this is the process that needs to be taken. I already explained this in post #3. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

I've got my PlayStation 3 hooked up by component right now to a TV that only does 1080i over component, but I don't need to disable to 720p to get 1080i in games. Just tested it now with Disgaea 3 and Final Fantasy XIII, both games support up to 1080p and both used 1080i on my TV.

Like I said guys it's been a while since I have played PS3 so I was just going by memory, but I am almost positive that if you don't disable 720p and 1080i in the dashboard, then the ps3 game will default to either one of those resolution and will not upsacle to 1080p, thus why you need to disable those 2 resolutions if you want the ps3 to upscale to 1080p

Not any more. If the game supports 1080p, it'll say it on the back of the box and it'll be 1080p. It used to be like that in the early days of PS3 but as long as the game supports 1080p and you have it selected as a compatible resolution, it'll run it at that.

Well that's just it, the PlayStation 3 doesn't upscale PS3 games. If the game chooses 720p to render things at then that's what you get even if you've enabled 1080i or 1080p. Apparently disabling 720p does trick some games into "rendering" at 1080 lines, but basically the game is rendering at 720p (or less) and upscaling to 1080p itself. With most games though all this is going to do is just force a 720p game to render at 480p instead.

Actually no, most console games native resolution is far lower than 720P even, it's the consoles job to scale them up to whatever resolution your tv is going to display them at. I believe they maybe a few games on ps3 that might be native 1080P but they aern't common.

No, not on the PlayStation 3. It doesn't rescale games, unlike the Xbox 360 it doesn't have a rescaler chip that can automatically rescale games without incurring any overhead. Games can render at lower resolution and then use the graphics hardware to stretch each rendered frame in to a new larger rendered frame, but on the PS3 it's not the consoles job to do this. It's up to the game to decide if taking the performance hit to do the rescaling is the best use of the PS3's rendering hardware.
