I can't believe people still spend money to go see these guys perform...

Then again, there's so called "professional wrestling" to reconcile so I guess this isn't too much of a stretch. Gene Simmons is a marketing genius.

Did the OP pony up the few thousand dollars Gene charges to meet the band?

It isn't a "few thousand dollars" it is $995 which is less than what a lot of other bands charge. Think I saw it is $1500 to meet Bon Jovi when they are here in April.

That may be true but AT would be awfully quiet if people followed that rule.

KISS is an icon. You can not like their music, and that is fine, but you have to admit they have had a huge impact on music. I used to listen to their music a lot back then because I was in middle school when they were their hottest in the mid 70's. Every kid loved them back then. We would all get together and pool our records and listen.

It is only recently I have started listening to them again 40 years later and I have to say they did make some good music, even if that genre of music is not something I listen to much.

How many albums have you sold?
Doesn't matter, I'm not claiming to be the be the God of RAWK.
Just because they've sold X million albums doesn't mean shit, except people will buy anything.
This is, after all, the same society that allows someone to neatly package a common rock and make a great deal of money.

35 years after the release of their first album and they are still touring and making new music. How many other bands can say that?

They had zero impact. Everything they've done had been done by Alice Cooper, The Tubes, Mott The Hoople et al prior to their start. They simply picked from each, glommed it all together and sold it.
Their only schtik is the makeup, without it they cease to exist.
Even their 3chord wunderstrum is repetitive to the point of being inane.
No serious musician ever pulls a KISS inc. song out of his ass to wow the family.
MAYBE "Beth", but only because the chick likes it.

Lots are, many are not. Doesn't matter. You can keep them, since you like them that much.

I lived through the original KISS start and my brother was a roadie for them, and in the beginning they were laughed at and never taken seriously as a rock band at all. They were considered sell outs to the establishment and corporations when they first started putting out albums and also in those days they were considered a kiddie band and it was an embarrassment to admit that you liked them or bought any of their silly stuff.
With all that being said, they were true marketing geniuses and were the first ones to market themselves into the history books not with their music, but with their marketing prowess and savvy. And in the end they are the ones that are laughing now. Go figure.

There's something wrong about seeing old ass men with their face painted and dressed like that. When they first came out, okay it looks stupid but they're young so they can get away with it. Sort of like when I was in Jr High Too Short was 17 and saying "beeeeeeyaaaach!" it was the shit, now he's 45 with a goatee full of gray hairs and he's still saying "beeeeeyaach!"? that shit's just silly now.
