A few lapping questions

Before I lap my IHS and vendetta cooler I was wondering...

1) When lapping the IHS, do you do anything special to protect the pins on the other side of the cpu? Do you use your bare hands?

2) How do you protect the cpu from water when using a wet lap? (sounds bad!)

3) To use my thermalright bolt-thru kit I need to remove the push pins on the vendetta. Any special methods, or will my pliers work just fine?

Thanks for the help.

1. you should of gotten a black thingy when you bought the cpu, use that.

2. your not suposed to submerge it. Just a tiny little drop and go slowly. Use vegi oil or mineral oil instead.

3. i have no idea as i havent touch pushpins in a very long while.

Im a waterblock person. :T

Thanks for the reply. I have discarded the "black thngy" that came with the cpu. Are there other options, or are fingers ok?
I read that one person used rubbing alcohol for lapping.

I prefer water because cleanup is easier, fingers will have to do, clean well with iso and allow a day to dry.

I use water.. I mean really small amount just to mist the actual sand paper. A spray bottle works.. very fine mist.. one spray and done. It also helps in keeping the sandpaper clean.. when it's wet it wipes clean really well from the stuff left on it from the lapping. I've also used the same alcohol I used for cleaning -- that also works just that it evaporates so fast on the paper and feels like it's not damp at all. Don't worry you wont get water on the good side of the CPU... even if you do for some insane reason... as long as it's dry and clean when you place it back in the mobo... you are golden.

If you dont have the black protective thingy that came with your CPU... you can take some cardboard, cut it about the same size of the CPU and tape it on (carefully around the edges and fold up so obviusly the tape is not on the back of the CPU which you are trying to sand). You need to have something to hang on to when you are lapping it... when i first did it after 10 minutes I had sanded my finger tips real nice... stupid me. Then again I was pushing down way too much but anyhow, it's way easier to lap the Heatsink than it is the CPU... just for the fact it's harder to hang on to that sucker properly.

I had a Scythe RevB and removed the stupid push pins and bought the same bolt through kit you mention. All i did was take a pair of scissors and cut the white push pins close to the heads and it was a simple of matter of snip snip and off they came. The kit works WONDERS!!

However, to this day, and I have tried about 6 types of coolers, there is nothing better than a TRUE... for how easy it is to mount, dismount, mount, dismout. I can mount that in like 30 seconds as the screws are not obstructed at all by the fins.. there is so much room for my hands to work it. When Lapping, I had to remove the freaking thing 10 times before I got the job right. Not sure how easy the Vendetta is.

The vendetta fan blocks two of the four pin holes in the mobo, so you have to remove the fan to mount or dismount the cooler. You have to squeeze the 4 rubber pins in and out of the sharp metal fins each time. It's easy to get cut. I had to move a memory stick up one spot in order for the cooler to fit my mobo( gigabyte p35-ds3l) in my mid tower case.
So, installation is a little annoying.

My cpu temps have been very good using the push pins and vendetta without any AS 5 paste. I'm going to install the bolt thru and add the paste at the same time soon. I have my E8400 at 3.4 ghz very stable and cool- 48-50 C.

I'm going to try for a higher overclock and boost the voltage. If my temps remain good, I may skip lapping for now.

I was able to get a stable overclock of 3.55 ghz and still have not used thermal paste or the bolt thru kit. My temps were ranging from 53-57 playing Crysis for 3 hours. I ran the prine95 torture test withoug errors, but stopped after 5-10 mintues due to temps creeping into the mid to high 60's. I'll have to break down and make a decision about lapping or just biting the bullet and removing the mobo and installing the bolt thru and paste.
