A few issues with Vista

I'm using 64 bit Vista Ultimate on my laptop (I also did a clean install) and everything would be perfect except for three issues I'm having:

My first issue is when a program stops responding. Now on my old computer, which had XP, when a program stopped responding I could open up the task manager and just end the program through there. Right now on my laptop when any program stops responding, the moment I try to open or close ANY window, the entire computer locks up and I am forced to power the computer off and turn it back on to get it working again (and a few times these hard resets have forced Vista to do a disk check). I'm wondering if there is a way to fix this because I'm certain this shouldn't be happening. The weird part of it is that say if I have firefox and AIM open and firefox stops responding. If I have an AIM chat open with someone else I can continue chatting with them, but if I try to close firefox, close any AIM window, open up the task manager, or pretty much try anything at all, the computer freezes. Anyone know how to fix this?

My second issue is fairly minor because I usually just put my laptop to sleep, but whenever I start up Vista and log in, it sits on the desktop doing nothing for about a minute (and as far as I can tell neither the processor nor hard drive are very active at this point), and then after that minute then anything that is supposed to start with Vista runs (for example my video drivers, some Thinkvantage utilities, and AIM).

My third issue is that sometimes my laptop won't wake up from sleep. I've noticed that this occurs much more often when I'm using battery power only. It also seems like the laptop occasionally "partially" wakes up, as in that the little moon symbol on my laptop turns off and the battery (or outlet) light turns on (which should mean the laptop is no longer asleep) and I can hear a fan running as well, but the computer still won't fully wake up.

This may be a stretch..... but what anti-virus software are you using? If it's McAffee or Norton, try something else like nod32.
I only ask because those sound very similar to the problems I had on a laptop a few years ago that came preloaded with Norton.. and after removing Norton it worked normal. Granted that was with XP, but I still wouldn't trust Norton.

Also, do you have all the Windows Updates installed?

Oh, and have you tried disabling the Turbo Memory / Readyboost?

I don't have any anti-virus software installed at the moment, I do have all the windows updates, and I haven't tried disabling Turbo Memory (I am also a little hesitant to do so, from what I've read it's a hassle to reactivate it properly, plus I have the most recent update for it which supposedly got rid of the issues with freezing).

I'd spend some time looking for BIOS and driver updates, while some of the common drivers are getting released on Microsoft Update there are a lot more that you'll have to go to the manufacturer for.

I.E. I had some nasty performance issues on my laptop (ThinkPad) that were not resolved until I got updated drivers directly from Lenovo.
