A few cable modem questions...

Can cable company detect a router?

How can I find out what the IP address is for my new cable modem?

Just had road runner installed on my PC - it works great so far. Can I just unplug and move it over to my Mac to test it out over there? I have ethernet on my 7500/100 but have never used it and thought maybe I should test it out before buying and installing a router. Would that be a good idea?

Just wondering.

Thanks,
krec😀

some areas, they track by MAC ID of the network card. Which means you have to call in and have them input the MAC id of the network card to get access to the internet.

Then there are some others (like mine and my friends) where the ISP tracks by the MAC of the cable modem's MAC.

So its best to test before you try any stunts.. though routers like Netgear RT311 can spoof your MAC for the sake of the service provider. Its best to give the routers MAC if they use MAC's to track.

Buy a router (Like SMC Barricade), most "Cable/DSL Modem Router" can clone the MAC number, so the system looks the same to the outside world.

If you want to test another Computer before buying a Router, you have to install the NIC that is currently working with the Internet connection, on the other Computer.
