a few beginner questions..like what does updating your bios do?

I have an intel d850gb mobo. I updated the chipset with the inf file first. restarted (fine). Then I installed the Application accelerator and the system crashed right before the loading screen. anyone have any clue why? I also was wondering what updating the bios does

Although I have no idea why the installation process of IAA crashed for you (I've installed it on a freshly reinstalled Win2k pro celeron system just fine), I'd recommend not updating your BIOS unless your computer seems to be having problems early in the boot process. BIOS updating isn't that hard (in most cases, make a bootable floppy with DOS on it, and copy the BIOS flashing program + BIOS file to the disk, then reboot, run program, and it's done), but if the power goes off, or your computer locks up during the flashing process, your motherboard is f---ed.
