Hello all. I've been building and messing around with computers since 6th grade or so, and was looking to get an A+ cert to work in a local shop part time. Problem is, I am DEAD broke, and was wondering if there was ANY way for a college student to somehow get a discount on the exams. I know that there used to be ways, and were some posts in the hot deals forums about it, but all those links have vanished :(

As a side note, there is one book that everyone reccomends for A+ . . . and I cannot remember the name for the life of me. Anyone know what it is?

prolly the red one that says a+ on it, as for cost I never heard of any discounts but tis not that expensive. Save a dollar a day and you'll be there in no time. I think mine cost $220 or so total for both parts.

the michael myers or whatever book (i think) is the one you're lookign for

A+ is like 106/exam if you get a voucher online

I just want to say that I'm A+ certified and it has done nothing for me.

SOrry to bring this from the dead, but I also have a question:

I can't seem to figure out how to just take the test - all I can find online is places where they teach entire courseware. Is it possible to buy a cram book, and take the test only, without instruction? I'm located in NortherVA/DC area if anyone has a particular recommendation on where to go for the test.

Sounds like it usually goes for about $130 each for the two exams. I also agree that most have said the Michael Myers A+ cert is the best book around.

Confused though - in any of the choices in looking for a test center, it gets to a question that has a long long list of companies or certs? Which do I choose?

I think I'm going to pick up that Myers book today. I'm doing decent on the practice, but think I might really need some brushing up.

Defenitely, lessons are useless. Either you know it or you don't. Computers is one thing you can't be taught, IMO. The book will help refresh you on things you may have forgotten, or may teach you a thing or two if you read carefully.

I had a friend who went to a local school that taught A+ and Network+ classes, and learned jack squat. Complete waste of $3000 (good thing the company he worked for paid for it). Oh yeah, and he failed the test after going to school for 3 months. I beleive he could've passed it, but the classes were horrible.
