so after they think they find something valueable, they take it to an expert who says "this is worth $XXXX"

Do they actually sell it for that much? or is that just some number they use to make they 'supposed' profits look better?

it depends. in a few episodes I've seen, the person will decide to hold onto the piece rather than sell it...ie. Dave with a vintage truck because it reminded him of one he played with as a child.

These shows are so fake and complete trash

I don't think SW is faked, the producers of course like to ramp up the drama between the bidders who dislike each other. In a small way it's like "Deadliest catch" where you just HAVE to find out if those pots are gonna have crabs, in SW you just HAVE to see who's gonna score and who's gonna get burned. Now if your referring to any show on True-TV every one is staged, not even worth watching at all, what's amazing and sad is a show like "Lizard lick towing" is actually watchable to some, ugh...

I think this show is more fake than most to be honest. Strange how an auction seems only to have the 5-6 people in the show even though 50 are standing around. I guess they were told just not to bid on it.

I think it's obvious that the producers pre-purchase units and seed them with some fancy items. I could swear I've seen convenient pieces to go along with History Channel's "theme" of the week...and neatly tie-in with their other shows (Pawn Stars, American Pickers, American Restoration, etc).

I've wondered about that too, I'm thinking that since anyone is welcomed to bid, (probably gotta per-register or something) the show's producers just peel off a $100 bill in agreement so only the show's people bid on the lockers..

It's "Rick's restorations", Pawn stars shop owners have been using them for restoring stuff for a long time, History channel decided that a show about restoring would be interesting and made a spin off (I like it). Now they have just come up with another spin-off from Pawn stars, "Counts Kustoms", these guys fix and restore the cars from Pawn stars. Storage Wars is on A+E, a totally different channel..

Maybe produced by the same folks? Nah.

They just copy each other I guess.

I was watching these shows and they can be interesting, but apparently they are rigged, that's what someone at work was saying. They put stuff in the containers ahead of time before they "bid". It's all acting. I don't see the point of making a reality show if it's not actually reality. Seems lot of them are like that.

I dunno.

The crowds were much smaller in the first episodes. The crowds are larger now because the show made storage auctions more popular.

Also, they only show a few units per storage yard. I imagine they don't show most of the units that the show's people don't win. I can recall at least one time where nobody on the show won any auctions at a particular storage yard.

Unless "Someone at work" is involved with the shows production they don't know squat..

My neighbor's wife convinced him to go to one of the local auctions and buy a locker...they spent about $350...and ended up donating most of the crap to Goodwill...he STILL has the truck canopy that was in the locker. He THOUGHT it would fit his Tacoma...but not even close.

there was at least one show where someone mentioned how many lots being sold which was much less than actually shown during the episode, and some of the regulars still didn't take one.

I firmly believe they plant stuff in the lockers on Auction Hunters but I'm not sure one way or the other on Storage Wars. I remember seeing a roundtable with the Storage Wars cast and they commented about how they 'never' find firearms (maybe once or twice in all their years) but Auction Hunters finds them about every show. In addition they pull out all sorts of other wild crap but Storage Wars is much more believable.

In the five-count multi-million dollar lawsuit filed in California, Hester makes detailed and explosive allegations against the show, which the network has previously defended as 100% real and not staged.

He also says that cast members confronted executives at an in-person meeting this year and expressed theirconcern over the show being rigged.

Hester says was fired days after meeting with executives and subsequently asking to be indemnified by the show for any third party claims regarding “the authenticity of the auction process and the Series.”

In a suit that is sure to cause ripples through the show and the network, Hester charges:

Producers staged entire units and enlisted the cooperation of owners of storage facilities to do so.
The show pays for storage lockers for “weaker” cast members as part of the manipulation
The show plants items in lockers after having them appraised weeks in advance
The show obtains items to be placed in the units from a business regularly featured on air
In addition, Hester charges that interviews with cast members are scripted and scenes of biding are faked to the extent that there are no auctions taking place while cast members and members of the public are shown bidding.

But perhaps the suit’s biggest bombshell is the charge that cast members, along with Hester, met with executives this year and expressed their concerns about the show being faked.

he suit contains numerous bombshell claims, including that that the network and producers regularly “salt” lockers with valuable items to add drama to the show, rig the bidding and even paid for a female cast member’s plastic surgery to add sex appeal!

From the same article....
