I am not sure what DVD it is, coz it's my friend's comp that I am adding his new CDRW to.
the mobo has 2 IDE channel, so which one should be Master and Slave?

and for say, just for fun, add a CD ROM in, how should be Master and slave now?

(gee, sound like an SM game...)

Here's how I have mine: HDD on primary master, DVD on primary slave, CD-RW on secondary master. My DVD had problems being in secondary.

what will he be using the cdrw mainly for? copying cd to cd or copying off hdd!
if he's mainly going to be copying cd to cd then it's best to have the dvd & cdrw on different ide channels! mind you, he can still have both devices on the same channel & simply make an image to hdd for copying. slower than cd>cd but without creating the conditions for buffer under runs! :)

HDD - Primary Master
CD-Rom - Primary Slave (better for cd to cd copying IMHO)

CD-RW - Secondary Master
DVD - Secondary Slave

(if there's not cd-rom switch the dvd with the cd-rom) :)

I'd say put the CDRW on Secondary Master, the HDD as Primary master of course.
If he is going to be doing mostly CD to CD copies then put the DVD on Primary Slave, if he is going to be copying from the HDD to the CDRW then I would put the DVD on Secondary Slave.

How should I set this up?
HD 1
HD 2
DVD
CD-RW

Iwill KK266 with 2 IDE ports, and a ABit Hot Rod 100 Pro. Currently I have both HD on seperate IDE channels both as Masters. DVDRom is on IDE 0 as master, CD-RW on IDE 1 as master. BIOS gave me an error with this setup (something about ATAPI drive needing a slave), so I set the DVD up as master and CD-RW as slave on IDE 0. Now, every OTHER time I boot up, the BIOS doesn't recognize my drives. WTF?

GImme some info ;-/

? i was told you should keep those ATAPI devices off the same controller as a HD because it would slow the HD to the level of the slower device. no way is my HD going to crawl at 2mb/s

Yeah do it like that.

TravisBickle: bacillus is right, anything even realtively new master and slave can be different speeds just fine. IDE is still inneffecient at communicating with both Master & Slave at the same time, but they can be different speeds without a problem.

ATA66 is fine, I'm pretty sure you have to go back to the PentiumMMX days to have this problem. I'm quite sure that the i440BX didn't have this problem, and I don't think the LX did either.
