Hello all, I upgrade my compy quite regularly and my most recent adventure with a new motherboard.
My Dragon Plus arrived yesterday via FedEx from NCIX while my Crucial memory (2x 256MB PC2100) had arrived a week prior from Crucial.com. So I'm very excited since this is my first DDR memory board. I get 'er all installed into my case (InWin Q500N) and fire 'er up without a prob. Enter the BIOS change what settings that need to be changed and proceed to install Windows 2000 Professional. During the install my compy locks up, so I'm thinkin' "crap!" I reset the system and try it again. Same thing. I take out a stick of RAM and try 'er again. This time Windows installs without a hitch. So now I'm thinkin' I've got some bad RAM in my possession.
Okay, no biggy. So I take my memory to work where I can test it. In every system I try the memory it works flawlessly. So now I figure I have a faulty DIM slot. I get back home stick my memory in DIMMs 1 and 3, format, install, no problem. I don?t see this as being too big of a problem for myself as I do not see myself needing all 3 DIMMs any time soon. So no point RMA?ing it.
Now that figured out I get Win2K installed and all my software and proceed to benchmark my new board. Sandra works great, giving my a memory score of 694/861. Then I go to run 3D Mark 2000/2001. The system locks up right after the benchmark begins. So now what. I try every different setting in the BIOS without any luck. Hmmmm?
I make my way to Soyo?s website and see that they released a new BIOS today, 2BA1. (I had flashed it to 2AA1 last night). I flash it again, reenter windows and try 3D Mark once again. Bam! It works! Sweet!
My board has now been running stable for 12 hours +. I?m very pleased with it. The onboard lan and audio work great, even though I?ll be putting in a SB Audigy soon enough.
I see so many people with unsolvable problems with this board, I just wanted to post my success after being stumped a couple times.
