A different side of China...

Oh boy, here comes all the anti China crap from the tree huggers now that the Olympics are less then an year away. Some of those pics look like they are 30 years old. No offence to the OP, and I'm not saying China don't have any of these problems but they tried this same BS when China was bidding for the 2008 Olympics.
 
No offense taken. I spent two months traveling China last year, and I loved it.

My girlfriend is Chinese, born and raised until the age of 16 there. Mother was Red Guard. She was the one who showed me this actually. And you can imagine the things her grandmother has been through. She was a landlord.

I posted it because I know a large number of people here are Chinese and figured it might hold some relevance. And for those who aren't informed on the peoples struggle there, that I saw first hand, then let it be known.

Just food for thought. Has nothing to do with the Olympics. Has more so to do with appreciation for the things we have, and respect for their will.

I just think it puts some perspective on things.

My apologies then. I've also seen equally bad or worse things in other third world countries.
 
I agree, it is out there. Just as bad if not worse than in China. *Cough* Darfur *cough*

I am not just singling China out for the sake of slandering China.

It's just something that's not really seen outside the country. I'm in no way saying that this is all over China, or that you walk down the streets this is what you encounter.

It's not. If I could have, I would have spent another 4 months traveling the place. It's such a wonderful people, such a wonderful place. It really is.

you don't even need to go to the countryside or provinces to see 80% of the country in poverty.

you get to see those kinds depicted in the pics just by going on the outskirts of beijing or shanghai.
 
It is sad that the human condition hasn't change with progress.

I?m glad that there are journalists who risk their lives to capture the hardship that many endure.

My assumption that China is in worst condition than here in Canada, but my personal observation lead me to believe that there are greater number of poor people around the world are living in worst condition today than the 70/80s.

The homeless population has more than double in every major city in Canada since the early 90s till now, and Victoria BC. Canada has seen more than a 30X increase since the early 80s.

Images as such, isn't rarely seen rather people simply choose not to care or bother to see it. ABCs or chinese who lived here or outside the country most of their lives that don't know, i too would put in those that don't care or bother to look it up.

People can easily find pictures of deplict the not so ideal image countries want to portray.

As someone already noted, you can find terrible conditions in ghettos across the USA. Although they won't be like the photos in that blog, they are well below standard that people picture when they think of America.

Side note: 1st link probably much better job of showing the other side of china that isn't often shown.

2nd link is mix bag and more or less coems off showing china as well just like any other country. You have some good here, some bad there. There's a billion people, not everyone is gonna live like what is deplicted.

The people in the ghetto in the USA are fat and obese. I am sad for parts of the world which still suffer from stupidity. Communism is the root of all problems. Capitalism has helped china. Every day when americans buy cheap crap from china, their condition improves.

Hopefully, when the people there are more aware of their situation, and when they don't have to worry about starvation, they can do something about their government..

That is a pretty ignorant ass thing to say. Your comment sounds like the same stuff a hardline Maoist would say except in favor of hardline capitalism.

Maoism was a foolish and destructive force in China but saying "capitalism" has helped China is an ignorant thing to say. China is the perfect example of why unrestrained capitalism can be as bad as Maoism.

I don't know if you have been to China, speak Chinese, studied Chinese history and politics and economics - if you have then I am suprised you would say something like that and if you haven't please read about modern China. Basically shit was bad under Mao and shit is still bad for the 90% of China who is stuck in a cycle of rural poverty.

This shouldn't be surprising to any early-generation Chinese-American. I'm a first-generation ABC and I've heard stories/reports of what is being depicted in these pictures all my life from Chinese newspapers. Ever seen the woman with no arms who picks clams with her feet and carries them in a bucket with her teeth? In a country as poor and highly-populated as China there are going to be a lot of occurrences of these things.

I've been to several asian countries. I am asian. Even though I am not Chinese, I know many people who are Chinese. Most of the women that I date are Chinese. My last girlfriend was Chinese. Many of my good friends are Chinese. I speak a little Mandarin - I have been taking courses for close to a year.

Without the USA buying cheap crap from china, china would be in worse shape. In china, there is no such thing as "unrestrained capitalism"... the government decides who can do business and who can't. Alot of it has to with family connections and state own companies. IIRC, one of the largest companies in China is owned by the military.

Its people like you who do not know anything about trade/business/commerce,/etc that ultimately hurt innocent civilians.

Historians have estimated that Mao killed more people than Hitler and Stalin put together. To compare Mao with Capitalism is plain stupid. Have you ever wonder why the standard of living of the average chinese is higher at the exact time capitalistic elements were introduced into the Chinese society?

Get a clue.
