A dell XPS with Integrated Graphics?

Yes that is stupid. BUt they can't have people buying the cheapo 999 Xps systems with 7800GTX go, and leave the overpriced 2400 models sitting in the factory.

Dell is ridiculous. Intel Extreme can't even render Doom 3 or HL2. Dell, this is a waste of time and money. Gamers will not buy this...

I think it is stupid for the first XPS M140 model with 900GMA video, but this may be a strategy to introduce the 14.1 widescreen line, then with 3d options later.
XPS line=better service, support, performance, etc, like Toyota and Lexus see source.
I can only speculate their decision to introduce the integrated video model first. Who knows, may be the 14.1 inch models will be surprisingly attractive (quality, design, engineering, flexible) or just paint.

"Dell and Toyota have studied each other in the past. Now Dell is borrowing from car maker's luxury branding approach to elevate its Dell XPS line of PCs to Lexus-like status, by offering extra features and services that can't be found on more pedestrian Dell boxes, and charging accordingly."

I agree.

My only thoughts are if they are planning on making this a dual core notebook in Q1 06. Understandable to keep the same chassis, but dumb.

"WE" may all think its stupid....but...I will assume we don't have any MBA's or Marketing specialist's in this thread and since Dell is the "most" successful PC company in the market place today we can only assume someone there must have an idea about what he is doing.

Yes i would agree with that except for one thing...

Their current XPS systems, especially the desktops, have Intel Processors!!! If they knew what they were doing, they would have put A64s into those. You cannot sell a desktop gaming pc without putting an A64 in it. I wouldn't be suprised if they are just as naive this go-round.

Who couldn't they sell it to? They couldn't sell it to you, or me. But we wouldn't buy a Dell gaming machine, would we?

The people they sell to know Intel and only Intel. Put something called "AMD" in their and people will think they're getting a second rate knockoff.

Don't laugh, I'm kidding.

😉

Ok, what appeasement would Dell give you people by putting a AMD processor in their computers? All you would do is talk about how overpriced they still were, how you don't like the design, how it's missing this feature or that feature, how much dell's service sucks, etc etc. People like to talk like if Dell started offering AMD processors, everyone on the board would suddenly start buying them. That is just not true and you don't see people on this board running in droves to buy HP or Gateway or eMachines computers for the same reasons. So STFU about Dell and AMD already, damn.

About XPS machines, you must no longer think of XPS machines as 'high-end' machines, but as slightly better machines than consumer level products, with more of a focus on multimedia HTPC features. XPS no longer means uber-leet gaming macin3.

Calm down, and take your Ritalin. Lots of people here buy Dell laptops. I wouldn't buy any of their current desktops, but I have purchased a few laptops from them.

XPS was their high end gaming machines, now it's just a BS marketing slogan to rip off the unwary.

Michael Dell's P&L sheets for the last 10 or so years tells him he's making all the right moves. You may not agree w/ Dell's strategies but they're the ones w/ the "W"s in their column every frickin' time.

just sayin'

But you didn't...and you still bought a Dell!! Sooooooooo,,does Dell have to sell AMD based computers to survive? Not in this lifetime!!

Laptops are a completely different story than desktops, and as far as laptop processors go, a PentiumM is just as good as a Turion.

Also andrew, I don't know what you're talking about when you say that buying the i9300 with a Turion 2.0 would have been easier when a 2.0 PentiumM meets or in some cases exceeds it.

Yeah, XPS isn't just the gaming nomination anymore. They've turned it into their higher quality lineup. For instance, they're marketing the old Dimension 9100 as an XPS (I think 400?) and its aimed at media playback, which seems to be the same thing this laptop is aimed at.

The Pentium M is a pretty nice gaming CPU. Much better than the P4 is, and is very comparable to the Athlon 64 even.

There are plenty of people who buy high end laptops that have little to no gaming ability. Remember, thats not all people need. In fact there are plenty of people who wouldn't bother gaming at all on a laptop just because its a laptop, regardless of what components it has. These people don't care that it only has integrated graphics.

Dell seem to have gone a sensible route in Canada, at least. They've replaced the old 600M with their new 14" widescreen, and called it the 630M. That's definitely where it belongs.

Is that even available in the US?????

Is what even available in the US? The 630M? It is, but it's being called the XPS M140. Exactly the same laptop, from the looks of it.

it should be soon.

it's the same thing as this new xps notebook. a bit smaller than the 6000, and a bit bigger than the 700m.

I just can't figure dell out...

why not?

when something new comes out sell it with as much value add as you can, aka the xps line. for instance if you want a 7800go you have to buy the xps, it's not available on the inspiron 9300 yet. that way you hit the early adopters with a higher price than they might otherwise have paid.

yeah, xps is now not just the gaming line but also the 'people that can speak english and will pick up the phone when you call' line.
