I needed to give a customer a ride to his job yesterday and the only vehicle we had available at the time was a tow truck. I hop in and take the guy where he needs to go. On the way back, I was looking at the control panel for all the pretty lights and PTO and all that cool stuff. It was then I saw the button labeled 'beacon'. Two days prior, I had been riding along with my roommate (works here as well as a driver) and he told me that if you pulled up to the streetlights that have the little emergency vehicle sensors on them that flipping that switch on will change the light. Naturally, I had to try it out given the chance. Next light I pull up to, I flip the switch and magically the light goes green! Magic! Fast forward to a block later as it's being explained to me by your friendly neighborhood officer that only certain emergency vehicles have that ability... oops! Turns out the 'beacon' switch turns on the red/blue LED lightbar which is only to be used during service!

Now, the question becomes: how can I 'thank' him for this great tip that almost got me a ticket? Suggestions welcome!

Well, there's your peek. At least I can laugh it off, right? :)

So basically you're an idiot to actually think tow trucks came with the light changing mechanism that is installed in ambulances & fire trucks?

I just wanted a 'cool story, brah' thread. Mission accomplished!

I worked 17 hours today and needed a little entertainment.

A couple years ago there were companies selling the transmitters to anyone with cash. Seems most municipalities hadn't encrypted their systems. I suspect that has changed.

At least in MN, tow trucks are considered emergency vehicles and thus can have flashing red lighs. Blue are reserved for the police, however. That's the answer I got when I asked the same question.
