A day at the office...

Case in point.
I started a new job a few weeks ago.
Today I uncovered my first mega fvck-up.
I missed a floor sink (that's a big square drain) that's going to be under a salad bar.
Today I had to cut concrete, jackhammer, dig, and stand on my head to add the drain I missed.

Moral of this story...
Don't cut corners to save time.

I didn't doublecheck my layout and count drains, I had an apprentice check my drawings. He found that I missed the drain. He told me. I got busy and forgot about it.
He reminded me today, after the new floor had been poured.
My reply, "Son, go to the shop and fetch the jackhammer, concrete saw and diamond blade. We're gonna gopher."
 
the biggest problem with a situation like that is, when you are new, people tend to be on you to do a lot of work in a little time.

Exactly the case.
It's not a new situation though, and I know better. Pisses me off that I picked people-pleasing rather than doing my job the way I'm supposed to.
I was already way ahead of the game. I should have stopped and done my due diligence.

could be worse...my mechanical subcontractor knocked off a sprinkler head today and flooded our site and damaged the store below the tenant space in the mall. He's gonna get backcharged for cleanup, sprinkler repairs, and replacing about 80 ceiling tile.

That made me think of a funny from last week...

Me: Hey Bob, I need a drawing of this kitchen layout so I can set drains.
Bob the Architect: We don't have a kitchen layout yet, the hospital hasn't picked out their equipment.
Me: The floor is being poured in three days, and unless the owner would like to use buckets, we should probably get something on paper.
Bob teh Architect: Well, just do the best you can.
Me: *laughing* I don't think "I was doing the best I could" is going to fly at the progress meeting when everyone asks "Where's the drains?"
BobTA: *laughing* Good point. I'll get something over to you today.

I did that once. The only problem was that the sprinkler head didn't break. The lift came off of the floor abour 6 inches until the side rail of the lift bent and the whole thing dropped to the floor. Scared the living sh|t outta me. I was working nights & was half asleep, up until that moment that is :/

I never told anyone about it, and hammered the lift rail back into place. The framers, on the otherhand, broke one every single day. It's like they had a contest or something. The first one they broke dumped 2 year old sprinkler water on some guy waiting at the deli for lunch. You can't buy moments like those....
