A cruncher is doon...I repeat...a cruncher is doon.

My Athlon 850 popped a cap on the m/b today, according to my nephew who heard a loud POP.

Guess it's time to check out the specials in Hot Deals on mobo/cpu deals.

yeah...trouble is...funds are quite limited. Tempted to wait a month or two and put a sweet board/cpu in there...

Sorry about that conjur. One of my crunchers kicked the bucket a couple of days ago. However, I got a new motherboard and cpu and now it's running 😀

man...getting more complicated as I think about it.

I have two options:

Replace with a similar board (very cheap route). It's a Jetway and has slot style CPU. It's noisy and I wouldn't mind going to a socket style as long as I could use the same PS...hmm...wait...I have a spare PS that came in an Antec case...hmmm...ok...that covers that. I have PC2100 RAM that I had in a Tyan S2460 but didn't work (bought registered RAM for that one) so I'm covered on power/RAM.

Are there any good mobo/cpu combo deals? Something in the combined range of $150? I'll have to poke around Newegg, Hot Deals and Chubby Wallet 😉

hmm...
Prises as per newegg.
Refurb. Abit IT7-Max2 v.2 $69
Intel Celeron 2.2GHz $77

Total cost, $146 plus shipping.

Celeron's are kinda sukky CPU's but I hear they crunch SETI just fine. You can always find a good CPU on the forums at a later time. And you might get a easy OC to 3ghz 🙂

<---- doesn't like celery 😉

I'd like to stick with AMD and O/C isn't that big of a deal...the now-dead PC was an Athlon 850 that was only O/C to 893 or so.

Sorry to hear about the cruncher and I understand the funds situation.

I would retire the 850 CPU for now and go for a XP1800/MB Combo and put that DDR2100 stick in and you're set and getting more WU for your buck 😉 , The XP's are sweet at Overclocking.

Nooo! they don't crunch SETI well at all!,they suck big time at SETI!:Q ,& many other DC projects too🙁
If you do a forum search your sure to turn up the thread about SETI & Cel P4s.
Put it this way I doubt even at 3GHz a Cel P4 will out crunch an XP1800!

MoFunk...I have some Crucial PC2100 RAM.

Perfect, then I would find yourself a nice nforce board to go with that 1800 and you will be set, all for under $150. Like the 8RDA+ for $83 and free shipping. So let's see 56+85=$141 + tax. Then save up for matching sticks of pc3200 later to run in dual and you will have one rocking machine. I have the 8rda+ and love it!

of course conjur, you could put that PC also on DF to help out your stats and the TeAm which we badly need!😀

Well...I'm getting there. I'm running DF in the background (with SETI) on my PIII 1.0-M laptop. Once I hit 25000 SETI WUs I'm going to split my fleet between DF and F@H.

BTW, these used to be on the motherboard!

:frown:

hey those things look like blown caps! Glad to hear that you will be switching more power over to DF, we need all the help we can get right now!:disgust:

might have another option. Bust out the soldering iron and replace the cap. Go down to RS and see if they got any... Worth a shot for buck part and 15 mins worth of time.

Well...it blew the first with the case on. My nephew heard a long pop and some pinging. He took the case and saw the cap laying on the bottom. He powered off. He later powered on and it came up but when he loaded his game, BOOM, the other one popped and the thing started smoking. I'm thinking there's something else wrong, too, so I'll just replace the gamut (mobo, PS, cpu, ram) I have the RAM and the PS already. Besides, I can dump my Athlon 1.0GHz off on him (after clearing off the HD) and use the new one for me 😉

Why would you try to boot a board with a poped Capacitor? Err anyway if you have some soldring skills, ya might be able to pick up some same model capacitors at a local electronics store and try to fix the board.

Better have a steady hand! Even tho it's not really that hard.

Yeah computers will work and boot sometimes with one cap gone. But if it starts poping and smoking it means that the board is getting too much current and well, the caps are to filter out the bumps. Should have left it off after the first one died.

I have no idea why he did. But..he'll foot 1/2 the bill of replacing the mobo/cpu (even if he doesn't know it yet) 😉

conjur,
I have a msi K7 Pro slot m\b collecting dust in the attic. It's yours free if you want it 🙂
