A cpu problem i ran into

I have a intel pentium 4 processor 3.0E @ 800MHz FSB: 512k CACHE and i couldnt get it
to work on my motherboard, which is a SOYO SY-P4VTP. Then i tried a new processor
similar to the one above but instead of 512k cache, it was 1MB CACHE, and it booted up
fine.. Does anyone know what the problem is? i've heard something about flashing the
bios but i do not know what that is, or is there any other solution i can use to get the chip
going? It's also too late to return the chip and any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

All of the 3.0E are 1MB cache. Are you sure the first one wasn't a 3.0C?
Also, generally the x.xC are more compatible than the x.xE. IDK why your first one didn't work, maybe it was a damaged 3.0E?

You probably just need to flash the BIOS to get support for the Prescott CPU's. Your motherboard is old so it probably just doesn't recognize the new Prescott CPU's. Check Soyo's website for instructions on how to flash the BIOS.
