I just saw it for the first time on Encore today and had some thoughts on it

1) When Bud tries to get to the drowning pool after Coffey takes over by swimming there, how is he not killed by the water pressure and temperature?

2) What was the pink stuff that Bud breathed when he went into the abyss? (and is it real )

I dont know why I kept hearing about the abyss being a really good movie. I liked it, but its not one the best movies Ive seen. The plot was completely different than what I thought it was. I always thought that it was supposed to be a scary flick, but there wanst anything the least bit scary about it.

also, the ending kinda left me dissapointed

I always though there was only one ending. The one where the whole alien structure raises up from the bottom of the ocean.

I remember seeing two different endings. One cuts out most of the alien action at the end.

Well there is one where they show the aliens talking to him, well actually showing him pictures of the Earth and why the Earth should be destroyed by the huge tital waves. Then they show him with Lindsey, right?
The pink stuff is the oxygenated liquid so I guess the water pressure won't crush his lungs. They have that stuff, I saw some pictures of rats being submurged and 'breathing' it.

He wasn't killed by the pressure because his body was already aclimated to that depth.

That pink stuff was liquid oxygen. Not sure about how it's made, but it's basially just water with a very high percentage of oxygen. It does exist.

I was watching some show on like TLC and they said that a human tried it:Q

He said that is sort hurt his lungs using it at first, but didn't have any problems afterwards.

To get into nerdy technical detail...underwater vessels/mining rigs or whatever you want to call them have are kept pressurized. There is a very long time on the way down (shown in the movie when the troops arrive) when new arrivals spend time in a chamber that slowly pressurizes up to what the station is kept at. Likewise when they go up top (although the aliens fixed that in the movie, like they said.)
Bud didn't freeze because he had on the thermal wetsuit thingy. Yeah, they make breathable goo, I saw them do the whole rat in a bucket thing they did in the movie.

***Spoiler?***
As for the other ending, that's the directors cut, which makes the movie about 3 hours long. It adds a completely new twist to the plot. The russians blame the US for the sunk sub (which was actually sunk by the aliens). The US denies it, and claims that the russians sunk their own sub as an excuse to make war. The crew underwater hear how the world is basically on the brink of nuclear war. The aliens are planning on destroying mankind, and send massize tsunami-like waves to all the major costal cities, but then descide not to, because they are won over by the love between buck and his ex-wife, or some sentimental goo like that.

I always wondered, as the movie kept it ambigous...were they aliens, or some sort of underwater species native to earth?

Rent the Director's Cut version DVD, it has the other complete ending on it. It really completely changes the movie.

It's been awhile since I've watched it. Were they "aliens" or were they intelligent sea creatures?

They were aliens, the released movie doesn't go into as much detail and cut out around 45 minutes. Watch the director's cut dvd for the full story. It's almost 2h:45m long though.

Still a good flick. And some interesting stories about "The Abuse" and the reason some of the actors won't work with James Cameron any more.

The Abyss is a KICKASS movie. Gonna get it on DVD. Ohh, and watch the director's cut. The theatrical version cuts out a bunch of stuff and makes the ending seem kinda pointless. The director's cut fills in all the gaps.

WTF? You totally missed the point. It was a wake-up call. As Bud said, "They want us to grow up and put away childish things", ie, war.

The director's cut is frickin' awesome. One of my favorite DVDs.
